No Miracle: Bucks Picking 8th

Everything was going to form in the 2008 draft lottery until the Bobcats showed up in the ninth spot, meaning the Bulls had jumped into the lottery.  Then unfortunately Bango appeared in the next envelope, meaning the Bucks had not leaped into the top three and instead had dropped one slot from their expected position. To make matters worse, the division rival Bulls snagged the first overall pick. Miami will pick second and the Timberwolves third.

And now that our dreams of Rose and Beasley have been squashed, here's your mandatory reading: Russell Westbrook, Anthony Randolph, Eric Gordon, Danilo Gallinari, Kevin Love, D.J. Augustin (for now).

I think the Buck got to go point guard with this pick.

Or trade down and get a point, if he’s too high at #8.

Brandon Webb, do I need to say more?

I disagree

The Bucks’ biggest problem is and recently always has been at the 3 spot. That’s where they need to focus.

Also, I do not think that the Bulls will be instantly upgraded if they take Beasley or Rose. In terms of talent, yes, but in terms of team success, I don’t think either player can fix the situation by themselves. Think about it; you still have to deal with Kirk Heinrich, Larry Hughes, Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, Tyrus Thomas, Drew Gooden, Thabo Sefolosha, Andres Nocioni…all of whom are ‘good’ players but just haven’t met success. Adding another good player to this mix isn’t going to fix Chicago.

The Bulls were talking about trading Heinrich this summer, so they would need a point guard.

What are you guys going to do draft the foreign guy.

But the Bulls’ core has had success previously (when they were even younger in fact), so it’s not like that group can’t compete. Add a future star like Beasley or Rose plus a good coach and you’re definitely in the playoff mix next year and set up for a long time.

Small forward is definitely a bigger need on paper, but with Mo, Redd and Villanueva all very available this summer there’s also a good chance we can fill that need via trade. I’m intrigued by Gallinari and Randolph but they both have a lot of questions too. And I think in a general sense that PG is definitely a more important position than SF.

We have lots of talent on the roster right now at PG, but who knows how long Mo Williams will be around. I like Westbrook a lot and he seems to be the type of hard-nosed, two-way player that Hammond and Skiles liked in Detroit and Chicago. Plus while Westbrook’s not a “pure” PG right now, both Hammond and Skiles have had success with Billups and Hinrich, two bigger PGs who also aren’t really pass-first types. Not that Westbrook can be those guys off the bat, but I think it’s something to consider.

And so the fun begins…
