The biggest question of the season
I have been asking friends that are fans, have asked myself, and now am going to ask the Bucks fans on the web,
Who can we trade Michael Redd for?
The first problem is to get the man healthy, of course, so he needs to be playing, and playing well come February. At this point, I'd much rather see us to be able to go on without Redd, as his return may disrupt this mantra the current Bucks are enjoying at the moment. Adding Redd into our current equation decreases Bogut and Jennings touches, and right now, we don't want to do that.
Redd's salary
2009/10: $17 million
2010/11: $18.3 million (player option)
We know Redd is going to take the player option should he stay in Milwaukee and you can't blame him. If he declined and joined the free agent bonanza of 2010, he'd be lucky to earn half that. So, Bucks fans, where do we send Redd to?
Here are a couple of scenarios that I've read about previously, or dreamt up in my sleep:
Redd for Boozer
This trade wouldn't work on it's own, because Boozer only makes $12.32 million. Throw in Matt Harpring (1yr/$6.5mil) or Kyle Korver (1yr/$5.25mil) for Redd and Joe Alexander, and the thing works. The Jazz are struggling big time right now, if Redd were healthy I wonder if this would be viable. Plus we could rid ourselves of the Joe Alexander project early.
Redd for Dampier
A much less appealing trade from a talent standpoint, I've read about this trade on Brew Hoop before as a rumor. Dampier (2yr/$25mil) and Shawne Williams (1yr/$2.4mil) for Redd would work. Dampier's contract is in question however, because of a rumored minute clause. Basically, the rumor states that if Dampier plays less than 25 minutes a game, his contract for next year becomes non-guaranteed. In other words, let him rot on the bench and we get him off the books after this year. This trade would give the Bucks about $2 million in breathing room should another deal be pulled, and would make the Dallas Mavericks ridiculous, albeit lacking at the big man spot.
Redd for Shaq
OK, so I admit I pulled this one out of thin air, but it's not TOTALLY insane. I could never see Shaq playing for the Bucks, he'd probably retire instead of doing so, but if the Shaq in Cleveland experiment didn't go so well come February, something could happen. Shaq (1yr/$21mil) for Redd, Alexander, and Ukic (1yr/$1.4mil) would work. A few other scenarios would work too, but again, the Redd headache would end come the end of this season, and could allow us to make a splash in the acclaimed 2010 free agent market.
So hopefully I got some creative juices flowing on this Redd to ????? question. Let's hear what the Bucks fanbase thinks of where we could send Redd. Or maybe you think I'm nuts and we should keep him. Whatever the case, let's hear it.

it would work...
I’d be okay with that trade, but only if McGrady stayed on the bench and played a sixth man role or not at all. At this point, I think any trade should be made to preserve the nucleus we have right now, as opposed to bringing someone in that would ultimately change the way the Bucks are playing.

Redd the wrench
The Redd/ McGrady trade sounds great, but Morey is too smart to drop Redd’s offensive game into the well oiled offensive unit in Houston. Redd would put up numbers (if healthy) but only at the expense of the rest of the team.
Only a few suitors...
This is a great question…I’m really not sure, mainly b/c so few teams would have any interest and within that group I’m not sure anyone would be willing to give up anything useful (like expiring deals, picks, or young players). I think you’ve covered most of them, and it’s obviously a no-go as long as he’s on the shelf.
If Redd does get traded it will probably be close to the deadline, but it’s going to be very dependent on where teams are record-wise and who thinks they need a scorer to get over the hump. So often with blockbusters it’s a team making a desperation move, so it’s a bit harder to predict. Certainly the more a team like Utah or Dallas struggles relative to expectations, the better the chance they’d roll the dice. At this point I think the Bucks would take expirings for him, but there’s no guarantee anyone will be offering them.
If he gets healthy and plays well, then it’s also possible that a team with cap space could be interested in him should they strike out with the big names. There are an awful lot of teams with a ton of cap space projected for next summer, but somebody’s inevitably going to be left out in the cold after the big names sign. I’m not sure getting the final year of Redd’s deal will be much consolation, but at the very least their GM could claim they got a name with plenty of flexibility as an expiring deal during the following season.
Good point...
upnorthfan, while t-mac surely didn’t earn the money he’s getting paid for, they’d never trade him for another year of an injury-prone subsuperstar that is Michael Redd. We don’t really have an X-factor in this scenario either. The Bucks have some decent trade chips, ie the expiring deals of Ridnour and Thomas, and Thomas would definitely be a quality pickup for a competing team needing a veteran big man. But other than our young core that we’d be foolish to give up (Meeks, LRMaM especially), we don’t have much to offer in return either.
Expanding on this, would you be okay with the Bucks throwing in their next year’s first round draft pick to get Redd off the books?
I was about to suggest that. Yes to get rid of Redd and Gadz a year early, throw in the “unprotected” first round pick.
With that savings we could go try and lure D Wade from Miami and resign Warrick at a modest price.
With Redd, RJ and Danny G off the books a year early, that cits the 2010/2011 payroll by 40 million. Do it!!
No way I'd give up an unprotected 1st
Unless we are getting a player of value in return, I wouldn’t give up a first. For the Bucks to be contenders they have to hit home runs through the draft and use free agency to complement those guys IMO. Could Jennings be our superstar? Who knows. Maybe…hopefully.
This upcoming draft is looking very good, especially at the PF position, and whoever we draft is going to be cheap for four years. No way I give up a first for cap space that the Bucks likely wouldn’t be able to use on an elite player. Too much risk IMO.
Right now our pick wouldn’t be very high, but we’re way too early to bank on it staying that way (what if Bogut or Jennings gets hurt? what if they can’t sustain this level of play?). The problem is that lotto-protecting firsts lowers their value a lot as well.
If we could unload 25 million next year, in addition to the 15 million we are already saving next year on RJ’s trade, we could buy two expensive free agents to mix in with Bogut, Jennings, Mbah A Moute and Meeks.
Grabbing two young experienced talented free agents means we could win next year. Waiting on draft picks is great, but you are another two or three years in the waiting.
So…yes, I would trade Redd, Gadz and our number one, for Macgrady.
Then ext year in theory could be potentially…
Bogut
Bosh
Mbah A Moute
D Wade
Jennings
You wouldn’t give up our first and garbage for that?
Potentially? Jennings can be a great recruiting chip. Wade loves Milwaukee.
I would in a New York second. BTW, I love draft picks so much this is the first I ever said I would throw in a number pick, so believe me, this must be a good deal. Am I missing something?
I just don’t think a superstar would come here as a FA, so the hypothetical isn’t very compelling to me.
I agree having Jennings/Bogut would help, but especially next summer there are a ton of teams with cap space who will be chasing LBJ, Wade, and Bosh. All those guys will get max deals, so can the Bucks beat out the Nets, Knicks, Heat and possibly Bulls? I could be wrong, but I don’t think so.
I think it’s more likely the Bucks could lure a guy like Lee or Boozer if they were willing to overpay, but then you start going down the same path of paying superstar dollars for a non-superstar. Could work out, could blow up in your face. I’d be happy to dump Redd’s contract for expirings to at least get in the game, but I don’t think we can afford to use potential lottery picks to clear cap space a year early.

That is such a defeatus (sp?) attitude. Unfortunately we have been beaten and down trodden for so long, who could blame you or anyone else for seeing the Bucks as non appealing.
However, I don’t believe that is the case any longer. We have an NBA coaching staff, a GM that soon will have the financial and roster flexibilty to up grade from where we are at now.
In recruiting, Brandon Jennings is our Reggie White.
I may be a year early than most, but I think Milwaukee has slowly starting the ball rolling already on the national landscape.
Did you notice Jennings was on the front of ESPN online three times in the last seven days?
Also, the NBA is screaming for new stars. We have one, and all that could come with it, ie. better calls from the officials, espcially at home where the BC can get rabid loud in a hurry.
So I respect what you say and feel ya, but I disagree. I do agree there will be more bidders next year than the year after, but I disagree that Milwaukee is still an unattractive place.
I am here to say this Isn’t your Daddy’s Milwaukee Bucks". I may be over selling saying two would come or we could handle such financial ramifications next year, but I could see Wade here very easily.
And in theory the scenario I laid out would work. So my question to you would then be…IF you had a crystal ball and saw my scanario play out, would you throw in our number one unprotected pick to make my deal that’s on the table happen?
Of course
If you can make a move that gets you Bosh or Wade you do it, no question. If you can do it without giving up Bogut or Jennings then a million times yes. Even though I don’t think that would happen, I’d be willing to dump Redd’s deal for a chance to spend some money elsewhere (I’m guessing someone like Childress would be a more likely target).

After tonight....
next years free agents might actually glance, even if for a second, at landing in mke. What a night.
