Probable starters:

PG Brandon Jennings
Nick Calathes (?) SG Jodie Meeks
Luke Jackson (?!!?)
SF Luc Mbah a Moute
Andre Brown (?)
PF Joe Alexander
Ahmad Nivins (?)
C Amir Johnson

  • Lineups. If I had it my way I'd roll out the lineup above, but we won't know what the Bucks will do on that front until shortly before tipoff.  Salim Stoudamire might not play because of his groin injury, so I'd hope they go with the guys who are actually going to be on the roster in November.

I have no idea who the Mavs are going to play, so I just randomly picked the most interesting guys I found on their roster.  Needless to say, the Bucks on talent should win this going away, but summer league is weird and strange so who knows.
  • TV.  I'm in Vegas as we speak, so I'll plan to leave comments in this thread (basically the easiest way to live blog the game) and then paste them into a recap after the game.  You can watch all the games live or on demand at the link above.

Jerel McNeal is playing right now with the Kings…not doing much so far.

John Hammond and Joe Dumars are sitting next to each other as they watch the Kings/Pistons. The entire Bucks braintrust is in the house…McKinney and Weltman seated near Hammond, the coaching staff on the other side of the gym.

Terry Stotts and Larry Harris are now catching up—probably not recounting their glory days in Milwaukee.

the first thing i want to know

is how Jennings receives coaching. Even though Skiles isn’t there, I want to know how he reacts to coaches and/or teammates working with him on the sidelines, in the huddle, whatever. It’ll go a long way towards figuring out if he’s serious about being an NBA player…or just being a basketball player.

It is interesting watching guys interact on the court. You can tell the non-roster guys are especially eager to look like good teammates—help people up, offer encouragement, etc. Never hurts to look like a good teammate when you’re fighting for a job.

Not sure if you meant the sidelines or in Vegas period, but Skiles is in the building along with everybody else. I assume they’ll rotate the bench coaching between the assistants like last year.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i meant more of the sidelines

but if he’s blowing his Euros at the high roller tables, that’s something worth noting as well.

by the way, check out O’Shea’s to see if they still have the 24-hour $5 blackjack table. You can stay there for hours and not lose everything, and the dealers are especially friendly.

No, I do not work at O’Shea’s.

You clearly work at O'Sheas

Why don’t you just swing by UNLV and watch the Bucks???

the closest casinos to me

are the ones in Atlantic City. That’s my main excuse.

My mom used to work for an airline. Before she got laid off (just like everyone else), I could have flown round trip for free. I almost went two years ago, but I couldn’t get tickets.

The NBA is a small world: Carlisle sitting a row in front of his assistant Terry Stotts, who’s six rows ahead of the guy who (kinda) hired him Larry Harris, who’s three rows in front of the guy who replaced him John Hammond, who’s next to his old boss Joe Dumars. Ty Lue, Ronny Turiaf, and Marcus Camby also in the house.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 8:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

two of those players

could probably benefit from playing in the Summer League, rather than watching

Warmups starting

Alexander isn’t doing the pre-game dunk routine he did last year. Jennings has missed two off-the-backboard alley-oops.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Starting lineup is what we predicted…this is a pretty stacked team for Vegas.

Skiles is watching the game by himself on one side of the court.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Johnson gets a couple early touches—turn it over on one, turns into the lane and has a righty hook goaltended.

Mbah a Moute finds Meeks for an open jumper and then drives around Luke Jackson for a finish

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Lazy pass by Jennings starts a break the other way. He’s got an interesting matchup against the speedy Rodrigue Beaubois.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:13 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

let's cut down on that sort of thing now

Jennings can be an amazing passer. But only if he puts the right amount of effort into every pass, not just the highlight reel passes.

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

Jennings finds Alexander with a nice pass after getting by Beaubois, but Alexander can’t finish in traffic. Next time down the court BJ drives and gets a clear look but the ball just slips out of his hand. Not an eye-opening start as the Bucks trail 9-6 early.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:15 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Joe and Luke Jackson have dueling Frodo haircuts right now…Luke Ridnour would be proud.

Alexander and Johnson have had nice blocks in the early going.

something that irks me

is that the Bucks can’t even get exposure during the summer league

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-42-53/David-Thorpe-Livetweeting-from-Summer-League.html

As soon as the last game was over, David Thorpe up and leaves his liveblogging post. Sure, he’s been there all day, but at least have SOMEONE at ESPN do it.

Oh well, Frank Madden is doing better than anyone tWWL can come up with.

I would have thought the Jennings novelty factor would be worth something from a national media perspective, but the blackhole effect of Milwaukee is apparently stronger.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yet they have no problem drinking our beer, obsessing over our ex-quarterback, and making fun of our fatties.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw Thorpe “sign-off”!!!

by BigO1 on Jul 10, 2009 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Two jumper misses in a row by Jennings. He’s looking a bit tight out there.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:19 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Jennings finds Meeks twice in a row for open looks…misses the first but he makes the second.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Alexander finally hits a tough hanger in the lane after missing his first few shots. He’s not do much on the defensive boards but he doesn’t look out of place at least. And then the balls flies out of his hand has he drives past a guy for a dunk. Oh well.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It seems like Alexander loses control of the ball pretty often. I wonder if he has trouble keeping a grip? Maybe he is cursed with small hands, like Kwame Brown.

by MadTown Hoops on Jul 11, 2009 1:51 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Stoudamire and Delaney in, BJ and Meeks out. Not a bright start for BJ.

Szymon S is in!

15-14 after one

Not a performance to write home about.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:30 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Bucks only shot 33% from the field in the first, but the Mavs had ten turnovers, most of them on travels, palms and double-dribbles.

Jennings and Meeks back in with 8 min left in the second.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:33 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Jennings gets the break started with a nice bounce pass to Simple Simon, who gets called for a charge as he tries to throw a wraparound pass. Gee, can’t believe he’s never made it over to the NBA.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:35 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Beaubois gets by Jennings a couple times to locate open teammates…Beaubois is also a burner but Jennings needs to do better.

Still, he’s getting guys good looks—Alexander misses an open 18-footer and Meeks hits a similar shot from the left side in transition.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Jennings still looking for his first bucket as he misses in the lane, gets his own rebound and draws a loose ball foul.

Meanwhile, Alexander can’t buy a bucket from the outside.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

that's fine,

Alexander’s game should be a majority of movement towards the rim. He’s strong and can jump; come off screens and attack the basket.

I’m worried about Jennings, but it sounds like he’s at least setting up his teammates. That’s priority number one in my book.

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell_M on Jul 10, 2009 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he’s going to have tough time scoring with his frame…he’s a very slight dude.

Everything’s going through Alexander right now…he’s still struggling to make shots but he doesn’t look that bad. 3/13 fg, 9 pts, 5 rebs.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe David Thorpe has a few suggestions

Oh, wait a minute!

28-27 at half

Yes, there is a shot-clock being used.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Joe Alexander drives, glasses and one. We’ve heard about 50 “and one!” yells today, and that was probably the first time it’s actually come true.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:03 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i HATE the "and one!" yells

especially when the shooter misses the shot. yeah, you got fouled, fine. don’t yell out “and 1” when there aren’t any refs.

yes, i am easily irritated during pickup games

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell_M on Jul 10, 2009 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Beaubois beats Jennings for the alley oop, then Jennings forces a 20-footer on the other end. Um, yeah.

They’re giving Alexander a lot of iso looks in the high post against Ahmad Nivins (PF).

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:05 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

just like they said they would

by Mitchell_M on Jul 10, 2009 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jennings now 0-7 after his tough reverse effort goes cannoning off the bottom of the rim. He’s finding guys fairly well but nothing is falling. On the plus side he only has one turnover, so it’s not like he’s playing out of control.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:11 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

C'mon Kelvin

I want Joe or BJ in there at all times…Salim/Delaney/Palacios/Simon/Richard isn’t any fun.

Just lots of fouling and not scoring right now…36-34 Mavs with 3 minutes left in the third. Yikes. I don’t think the Bucks have made a field goal in the last 7 minutes.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Jennings for three!

Right wing with two minutes left…thank God he’s on the board. Then he draws a charge on the other end.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Jennings blows by Miles in the backcourt and pulls up for the 20-footer. Good finish to the quarter as the Bucks stretch to a commanding 44-39 lead. Hey, five points is a lot for this team tonight.

Amir

How does Johnson look defensively? Is he intimidating or invisible?

by Jeremy Schmidt on Jul 10, 2009 10:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

he's...big

His 6’9"/ 210 listing is a joke. Hasn’t really played in the second half but he had one huge block in the first, plenty of fouls otherwise. Apparently he’s got 5 turnovers but it doesn’t seem like that many

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That sounds....

What is the opposite of encouraging? Discouraging? Ah well, can’t glean too much from one summer league game I guess.

Great work so far. King Kong ain’t got shit on you…and by King Kong I mean David Thorpe.

by Jeremy Schmidt on Jul 10, 2009 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks dude.

Yeah, Amir’s showed why the Pistons gave up on him. Great physical talent, just no execution on it.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

jennings gets into the lane, scissors his legs and gets a high-arcing teardrop to fall. He’s not going to score over guys, so that’ll be a useful shot.

And then he takes a too-quick-three on the break. Ah well.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:33 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

On the other side, Ahmad Nivins has been the best player in the game. He was projected by Ford to be the Bucks’ second rounder…good strength, decent shot.

Buck Vs Mavs

Got anything on Lorrenzo Wade?

by Hrow on Jul 10, 2009 10:37 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Hasn't played

Richard, Palacios, Delaney and Simple Simon are the only non-roster guys getting minutes.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

"Stay high! Stay high"

Apparently Sampson wants Amir to stay high in the lane on defense.

And then Amir swats Nivins’ shot.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

And then Amir gets a steal and hits…a 20-foot jumper? Interesting. Gadzuric may have competition in the big-guys-who-shoot-too-much-from-the-outside department.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Please

no. Just no. I can’t handle any more of that.

Lo Wade is a good defensive player thats gets the job done, just not a flashy player

by Hrow on Jul 10, 2009 10:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

he needs mins tho

by Hrow on Jul 10, 2009 10:45 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Johnson probably won’t play later in the week, so that would open up some minutes for him.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whats your thoughts on the guys on the bench that havent played yet? Have you seen them practice or anything? whos the guys to watch for other than the starters?

by Hrow on Jul 10, 2009 10:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I really don’t know much of anything about those guys to be honest…I didn’t go to any of the practices last week.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Meeks has quietly scored 13 on 6/9 fg—he’s pretty much been as advertised, just hitting shots from all over the place.

by Frank Madden on Jul 10, 2009 10:55 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Bucks win 65-59.

More later.
