How I became a Bucks fan.
So how did 5 guys from Kansas City become fans of the Milwaukee Bucks? Being manly men we were fans of most sports but did not have a local NBA team. We were all huge NCAA basketball fans and the NBA seemed like a natural progression of our fandom. The Royals and the Chiefs were under-performing and we needed a spark in our sports lives. So how does one pick a completely new team to be a fan of?
First and foremost we decided we did not want to jump on any bandwagons. We were dedicated Royals fans used to long periods of losing and wanted to join at the bottom so as to more enjoy the success that would surely come later. (Surely, right?) So right off the bat we eliminated any team that had made the playoffs in 2007/08 and focused exclusively on the lottery teams.
Then we started cutting teams.
The Timberwolves were cut because of our natural rivalry with the city because of the Twins.
The Bulls were cut because they couldn’t escape their association with Jordan.
The Supersonics were cut because they were in the middle of a move to OK City and that made us very wary of their ownership.
The Heat were cut because they had won a championship too recently.
The Knicks were cut because they’re in NY.
The Clippers were cut because they are cursed.
The Bobcats and Grizzlies were cut for not having enough history.
The Kings were cut because we didn’t want to root for a team that had left KC.
After all the whittling down we settled on 2 finalist: The Portland Trailblazers and the Milwaukee Bucks
Both had fairly strong cases. Portland had just drafted Greg Oden who looked to be a very charismatic young star. They were young, and despite missing the playoffs were .500 on the year. They had been around for a while and had some good history with some Hall-of-Famers like Bill Walton. They also played in the much tougher Western Conference.
Milwaukee also had some great history and great players like Lew Alcindor and Oscar Robinson. They also had the advantage of being much closer, geographically. They had a gold medalist on the team and looked to improve instantly in the draft with a high pick.
In our group there were the two camps and each was very passionate about their pick. We knew we needed to make a decision soon before each group became too attached to their choices. When we made a decision we needed everybody on board and no-one having any regrets.
And then one night it happened. We were all sitting around a bar one night, and someone came up with the Bucks High Five. (see next article) And when we couldn’t stop doing it, our decision was made. That night we became Bucks fans.
We started by picking up some gear, hats shirts, bumper stickers whatever we could get our hands on. Someone got a Charlie Villanueva jersey, painful now, but remember we were new at the time.
Last March we made our first pilgrimage to Milwaukee to watch the Bucks. We enjoyed both a loss to New Orleans and a stunning win against the World Champion Celtics.
Now, halfway through our second year, and we are loving every minute of it. We have some great young talent in the Young Buck and Bogut. And lots of crap to complain about with Redd’s injury and certain draft picks not panning out. (Yi Jinlan., Joe Alexander.) We are also very much looking forward to our second trip up to the Fortress on Fourth this March.

KC Fans
As a Bucks fan exciled in the heart of college basketball (NC), it is great to see proud Bucks fans all around the world.

Awesome
Can’t emphasize enough how happy we are to have you guys on our side :)
I sometimes joke about being “stuck” with the Bucks since I grew up in Wisconsin, but there’s something fun about rooting for the underdogs. Having lived on the East Coast for a decade, I enjoy wearing my Bucks gear around and getting incredulous looks for it…though at some point it’d be nice if we had to deal with the problem of bandwagon fans…

Fortress on Fourth, maybe not quite impregnable, but I like the nickname.

Love the logic and the Passion!
Underdogs provide the best, most loyal fans…either lifers or, as in Benny’s case, the newly converted. How sweet would it be to see all of Squad 6 stand and do the Bucks High Five? :)

It can absolutely be done
with as many fans as you want. Your only limited by space.

And I'm not some total idiot that doesn't know the difference between "your" and "you're"...
type-o on my part. Just had to clear that one up.

As a member of the KC crew...
You pretty much covered it. The high five had a lot to do with it, but for me it was more about the geography… Portland clear out on the west coast, Milwaukee just 8 hours up the street. I like to think Milwaukee and Kansas City are pretty similar towns too.

I love that eight hours is just up the street :)
The Bucks need to recognize you guys when you make your trip up…do you guys have tickets yet?

Nice to know that Portland at least made your final round.
You could always be a fan of both. :p

I think we'll stick with the Bucks
The Trailblazers high five just doesn’t sound quite right

Glad to hear there are more Bucks fans in KC. We’ve been managing just following most of the games online. Short of buying NBA league pass what options do we have for finding it on TV? And does NBA league pass even garauntee us any games?

i’ve gotten every game on the league pass, although not always the bucks broadcast of the game. honestly, whether its worth getting or not depends on how much you watch. if you’d only watch the bucks, probably not worth it. especially if you already get nba tv, they’ll take you live to wherever the best games are on the nights they aren’t airing a game.
you can always look around your part of town and find a bar that carries it too. i’m in south kc / raytown. coach’s on 103rd has it. wild wings on 350 i think carries it. they did last year but i haven’t been in there since the season began.
let’s hope we get two more big wins to almost get to .500 at the break!

What LP does for you is guarantee 40 out of market non national games a week.
And I’ve watched about 15 Bucks games so far this year (none recently) and I live in Seattle. So, you can take it for what it’s worth. Unless the Bucks are on TV a lot like the Cavs/Lakers, it’s worth getting LP consistently because otherwise you’ll be stuck using other methods to follow the Bucks. If you’re okay with that, go for it. If you’re not, LP is absolutely the way to go.
No mistakes in the tango, Donna. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
I'm not sure Donald Sterling is a human being. He had to have been manufactured by someone, possibly David Stern, so that one team could solely just make profit for the NBA while doing nothing good for themselves. -- Aykis 16
