Respect for Hammonds
Just thought I'd point out all the dap that Hammonds has been getting from the media as of late, with his trade deadline moves already being praised for there subtle brilliance. Bill Simmons (for my money one of the best NBA writers in the business, if not the sharpest) includes Hammonds among his top 3 GM's (along with Morey in Houston and Presti in OKC) for they shrewd business sense:
"Just in the past three years, we've seen general managers Sam Presti (Zombie Sonics), Daryl Morey (Rockets) and John Hammond (Bucks) build competitive teams by prudently watching their cap, searching for bargains, building around young talent and picks, and/or carving out enough cap space to take advantage of desperate suitors who will pay with draft picks or young players just to dump an unsavory contract. There's a method to their madness. They are the minority, not the majority. Most of their competitors sabotaged themselves and inadvertently reduced the value of franchises as a whole."
There's also a great write up on the cover of SI.com's NBA page today, highlighting how the Bucks moves have not only set the team up for a play-off run this season or next, but also the endless possibilities that are now available in 2011:
"One All-Star ought to do it because several key pieces are already in place. The Bucks have a budding star in point guard Brandon Jennings and a stud center in Bogut. They have a highly skilled forward in Ersan Ilyasova and a strong wing defender in Luc Mbah a Moute. And they have three picks -- one first- and two second-rounders -- in each of the next three drafts."
The entire article is a good read, especially for any Bucks fan excited about not only this season, but the chance for an even greater rise next season.

Good stuff
Though it’s kind of ironic considering Simmons predicted the Bucks to finish last in the conference at 19-63…
Jilted by his failed campaign
Simmons openly lobbied for the Milwaukee GM-ship. But I think it’s because he understands the fan-dom inherent in WI peeps’ DNA.
As for Hammonds, I have been very impressed. He has a very concise plan and he refuses to waver from it. Imagine if Bosh signs a huge deal witht he Raps, only to have the Raps fall utterly on their face (or have Amir Johnson become a true player…imagine), we could conceivably pair Bosh/Bogut/Brandon/Mbah-Moute/….Ersan.
I also have enjoyed the Skiles era in Milwaukee a great deal, and attribute a lot of Jennings’ maturation to the balding record-holder.
Nevertheless, it’s now condoned to ensconce yourself in Bucks/Bogut gear.

Sign Al Horford…. that would be awesome to have Horford and Bogut in the same frontcourt…. we would get every single rebound
I agree that the Bucks won’t be in the running for any top-tier stars via free agency (slim pickings that summer anyway), though it’s not out of the question that they could poach a bigger name from a team looking to dump salary and start over. The lack of clarity over the CBA adds another degree of uncertainty to the whole situation.
I don’t see the Hawks letting Horford leave (he’s RFA), but Landry is a very interesting possibility. Coming home to Milwaukee might actually be a positive thing from his perspective and we’ve tried to acquire him each of the past two seasons, so I think there would be some interest on both sides. Plus he’s only 26 now so he won’t be over the hill in 2011, and I think he and Ersan would complement each other well. Butler will also be unrestricted, but he’s already 29 and I don’t see him being a big difference-maker anymore. For the right price I’d be fine with it, but I’m not sure what that will be quite yet.

I'd love it...
Horford and Bogut would be crazy awesome down low. I would not be suprised at all if we see Josh Childress become a Buck this summer, seeing how interested he was last summer before hopping to Europe. He would be a great back-up behind Salmons. He isn’t known for his defense, but he’s super long and could learn under Skiles.
He is one of my top free-agent interests for this off-season along with Landry.

Childress would be an awesome signing...
Adding yet another versatile defender to this bunch coupled with some growth by Bogut, Jennings, and Ilyasova plus adding atleast a decent rotation player via the draft would be very nice…
It is nice to have those extra picks now too as it allows us to pursue who we want in the draft a little more or helps us trade for an upgrade somewhere…
I would have definitely expected us to make a run at Childress if we hadn’t acquired Salmons, but then again it’s not even clear at this point if Salmons will take his option next year. If he averages 18-20 ppg the rest of the way it’s probably in his best interest to opt out and try to snag a multi-year deal before the CBA gets reworked.
Which puts the Bucks in a tough spot because I think in many ways Salmons is a better short-term fit than Chill. Salmons doesn’t rebound or do the little things quite as well, but he’s a more proven scorer who can create his own shot, something the Bucks don’t really have otherwise. But he’s also 30 years old and not going to play like this forever. I’m also a bit wary of giving Chill a really long-term contract, because I think the Bucks have really benefits from not having guys locked into those kinds of deals. At this point I’m just hoping Salmons sticks around, which would give us a solid player next year who also happens to be expiring.

As a Piston's fan first and foremost
I would much rather have kept John Hammond. It would seem that he was the real brains in the organization.
However, as I also moonlight as a Bucks fan, he is doing an incredible job. By the way, how about I trade you the rotting carcasses of Ben Gordon and Charlie V for Bogut?
insert aussie stereotype here
And the media said Hammonds was an idiot for letting Charlie V walk, and Dumars was smart for snatching him up while he could.

It’s funny how during the summer GMs only get credit for making signings—it doesn’t even seem to matter what you paid for the guy, just that you used up all your cap room and added bodies. Think about how everyone was trashing the Bucks for supposedly giving up on this season while teams like the Pistons were getting plenty of credit. But Hammond’s greatest strength thus far has been knowing when to say no thanks—see RJ, CV and Sessions all going in the tank since they left. That also happened when he was in Detroit with Ben Wallace, which worked out horrifically for Chicago.
