Michael Redd not coming back until Feb?! Ugh...
I feel terrible for the guy as he was one of the best success stories of the NBA for a long time. A 2nd round pick earning a max contract and leading his team through nothing but hard work. Cant imagine Redd being anything more than a 10 ppg backup for the rest of his career which sucks =(

At least his contract is insured though which allowed the Bucks to acquire Maggette / keep Salmons...

Wasn't like he'd contribute very much anyway.
As much as I feel bad for him, I think it’s for the best he doesn’t play. I feel a bit bad saying that, but the Bucks are better without him at this point. They could attempt to deal him at the deadline then, or maybe they’re letting other teams know about his condition for a possible trade? Unlikely, but you never know.

At this point
There aren’t many things that should be too appealing for Redd’s contract to the Bucks. I’d bet it expires on their books. Who could they or would they trade for? They have a star PG and C and long term pieces at the 2, 3, and 4. They don’t need anybody unless somebody offers an all-star caliber player for him which is unlikely. For instance Atlanta offered Horford and the additional salary matching pieces for Redd, but those trades are unlikely.
Certainty is good
Last thing we want is Redd trying to come back before he’s ready—thus denying the Bucks insurance money and potentially disrupting the rotation—so this is good news.
yeah i was ecstatic to hear this... it means he wont F up the rotation and we get the insurance money which is nice...
hopefully he has a setback and is out the entire year… he is pretty much just a contract now…
This is good news because:
- rushing back prevents the Bucks from collecting the insurance money for Redd
- Skiles has enough vets to plug in on the perimiter, trying to fit Mike in would be akward
- Redd probably has more trade value as an insured contract than as an on court player
- if Mike does come back and play, he needs to take his time and make sure everything is stable and restrengthened… not rush back and wreck his knee for a 3rd time

Does anyone actually think that Redd will EVER play for Milw again???
There’s no way he does, IMO. The bucks have obviously moved on w/o him – and will either deal him at the deadline if they get a good offer, or simply let his contract expire.
I don’t expect to see him playing for the Bucks much in the 2010-2011 campaign, at most off the bench with a 3rd unit, not sure what will happen after that this season, wouldn’t object to bringing him back at a significantly reduced salary.

Significant amount? No.
But I’d be very surprised if he play 0 minutes this season. Probably garbage time in a handful of games at the end of the season.

Redd is gone... and he's certainly not coming back at a reduced salary....
Why would he? Because he loves the team so much? Bahahahahaha : )
Let's be real
No matter where Michael Redd goes, he’ll go at a reduced salary (1yr, $4-5mil maybe?) and come off the bench (2nd or 3rd string). Look at what Josh Howard and T-Mac are going thru now. Almost nobody wants them for even the MLE. Redd will probably be in a similar if not worse situation next year.
Which is why I don’t think its a bad idea to put him in the same role on the Bucks he’ll be in anywhere else 1yr, $4-5mil to be a 2nd stringer. Maybe we should find somebody else tho on the clearance rack for $1mil to back up Salmons as many ppl on here would like to suggest.
Yes... if he can play next year, it'll be at a much reduced salary....
The rub is, he is still w/ the Bucks for this year…. at 18mil
He’s already said he probably won’t be back until Feb – and considering he wasn’t w/ the team for the playoffs [for whatever reason] I don’t think the franchise really wants him around, IMO.
Look at T Mac last year… I think it’ll be a similar situation.
T-Mac played for the Raptors, Magic, and Rockets
Redd has only been a Buck.
Yes.... I'm aware TMac has played for several teams, but that has nothing to do w/ the topic
The point is…. TMac in Houston is eerily similar to what the Bucks have w/ Redd….. an ex all-star coming off a major injury in the final year of a huge contract who thinks he can still play, if healthy – but the team had already made plans to move on w/o him, so they just kept him away until they could move him at the deadline….
It was awkward to say the least. and I kinda hope the Bucks trade Redd before that scenario happens
I CAN'T THINK OF A SINGLE THING
What could the Bucks possibly get in a trade that would make it better than having $18mil to spend in FA next year?
I can’t think of one position of need for the Bucks right now worth $18mil. They have youth and depth at the 2, 3, 4 positions long term. They have an all star calibur player at the other 2 positions. So trade away an $18mil contract for a back-up PG and back-up C? NO THANKS! or maybe Iggy? What would he upgrade? He could fight for minutes with Maggette I guess. I can’t think of one realistic trade scenario that would appeal to me for his contract considering their current roster. I’ll take my $18mil and go FA shopping in 2011.
OK 1
the rights to Al Horford’s restricted FA status in 2011. Not as unrealistic as it may sound, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they moved Horford by the end of the season considering they likely won’t have the money to re-sign him after signing JJ and are stuck with limited success of winning regular season games. That’d probably be a 5 or 6 person trade tho to get salaries to match.

The Bucks have had trouble getting FAs to come to Milwaukee in the past.
Trading Redd’s expiring deal is a way for the Bucks to get talent. I guess it depends on Hammond’s creativity. Houston was able to pick up talent and draft picks for McGrady’s expiring contract, and I hope that Hammond explores all opportunities to improve the Bucks roster using Redd’s expiring. Nothing wrong with shopping.
Some team may be desparate to dump contracts at the trading deadline, including players who more than earn their money, so why not listen to their offers?

That's pretty much my train of thought
There’s no guarantee that your going to get good FA’s to Milwaukee, even if the money is there. Although I guess it depends on how much you think our recent success affects players views of playing in Milwaukee.

OK so name 3 realistic players we'd like to get in return for a trade tho? cuz I can't
It’s not even about getting a FA either, even if they don’t get anybody for Redd’s contract or sign anybody. I think that $18mil off the books is enough.
I agree.... but you never know how the NBA season will shake out...
If some team is dangling an all-star or a sweet package of draft picks at the deadline, you have to listen….
We won't have $18 million to spend on free agents
Easiest way to think about it: we’re over the cap, so when you subtract Redd’s salary we’ll be less than $18 million under the cap. If the cap stayed the same then we’d be around $10 million under as things currently stand, but that doesn’t include cap holds for a first round pick, LRMaM and CDR (about $1 million each for the two vets). And that’s not even factoring in the likelihood that a lockout prevents next summer from even happening with the current CBA.
That said, I think I might still agree with FTD’s argument about no deals making sense…at least not any that I can picture being possible at the moment. Tough to say.

It wouldn't surprise me to see JH deal Redd before training camp
He’s been quick to rid the team of Larry Harris-era players – and the Redd situation could turn into a distraction
and people are kidding themselves if they think a marquee FA would sign w/ Milw – it just doesn’t happen – and next years FA class is nothing special, anyways.
I think the announcement he won't play until at least Feb. was intended to prevent any distractions
I don’t think Redd is the kind of guy to be a distraction.

Whenever I hear things like marquee FA don't sign in Milwaukee
I always think it doesn’t happen…until it does. I wouldn’t count on it, but it only takes one guy.
Eagerly awaiting SBN Madison.
True.... and a couple of 50 win seasons would certainly help draw attention
Unfortunately, next years FA class is mediocre, at best.
Compared to the current FA crop...
…all future FA classes will appear to be mediocre… ;)
Squad Six is to the Bucks what beer is to Milwaukee (or anywhere else for that matter)... the catalyst for you doing dumb things in public and not feeling self-conscious!

We just need the basketball version of Reggie White
God needs to send someone to Wisconsin again…

Does Jennings count?
