Bucks/Grizzlies: Bucks look to bounce back
[Thanks to Brick for kicking us off -Frank]
Since I haven't seen a post yet dedicated to tonight's summer league game I thought I would throw one up.
A few things to note about the Memphis squad:
Memphis has several players in Las Vegas that have had some burn in the L. Leading the way is O.J. Mayo. He is in Las Vegas to test his mettle as a point guard. If his first summer league game is any indication, he has some work to do. Last night against the Hawks he had three assists to go with eight turnovers. He did lead Memphis in scoring with 20 points on 8-13 shooting.
Memphis roster also includes last year's #2 pick Hasheem Thabeet, who should provide a defensive challenge for Sanders and Gallon, Sam Young, DeMarre Carroll, Hamed Haddadi, the Iranian national, and Darrell Arthur.
One player absent from the team is Xavier Henry. According to ESPN's Chad Ford, they are having a contract dispute despite the rookie salary scale. Teams can pay anything from 80% to 120% of rookie scale amount. In 95% of cases, teams pay the 120% amount. Memphis, on the other hand, is trying to lowball Henry, so he is holding out of summer league play.
Game starts tonight at 7:00 PM Central. See you then.

Too bad this can't be front paged somehow

I guess if you recommend it, it will at least jump to the top of the fanposts.

Thanks for covering, Brick…just edited the title to match our usual format.

Sanders had an injured wrist from that fall yesterday...Dunno if he'll play tonight.

Please don’t end up being another injury prone big man…

If both Sanders and Hobson are out tonight,
the Summer Bucks are going to be the Darnell Jackson/ Tiny Gallon show. This summer team was already just barely above the D League select team when it came to talent, especially at the guard and swing positions.

Is Hobson guaranteed to be out for the whole SL?

Looked like he was wearing warmups rather than regular streetclothes last night.
And he’s on the Vegas roster as far as I can tell. Doubt they’ll risk a serious injury but it’s not like training camp is close either…

Thabeet goes on

Delaney is sad....
God Delaney is awful running the PG spot…. he can barely get the ball up the court
Would like to see him score inside more though

It would have been nice to see Jennings get a game or two in Vegas.
Having a point guard who can direct an offense would have given the Bucks a better idea of what they have with the bigs.

He’s made a couple jumpers, but he hasn’t been able to go inside because of Thabeet. He’s also been forcing a few threes, however.

Heisley is talking about the importance of having a shot blocking specialist.
The days of Mark Eaton and Manute Bol are long over. A shot blocking specialist is no good in today’s NBA if you are playing 4 on 5 on offense.
The Bucks seem to do much better with Sanders on the floor. He has size to match Thabeet and Adrien
Gallon doesn’t seem to use his size on defense yet.
This game is frusturating to watch from the Bucks standpoint

But Arroyo, Livingston, J Williams, A Johnson will get more than the BAE, IMO.

I think Sanders is going to garner some attention for this performance.
I expect to see him pop into NBA.com’s top 10 rookie performances for this game. It doesn’t help that Sacramento and D. Cousins is playing right now too. All the media want to see how Cousins responds in Vegas.
I don't expect to see him top 10 yet
but i’m damn excited to see him playing like this, he looks like the best player on the court easily
Sanders for Three!
I guess he will be able to space the floor with Maggette and Bogut working inside.
Sanders with a tre ?
He kinda looks like T-mac ..looks wise
by tommyr on Jul 13, 2010 9:03 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
If Sanders game translates to the NBA,
If he can shoot the three and be disruptive on defense, he does kind of make Ersan obsolete, doesn’t he?
by Brick's house on Jul 13, 2010 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions
Damn, losing two in a row on a buzzer beater
As bad as the Bucks looked, I am pretty happy it is this close. The Bucks guards are just so dreadful.
If the Bucks PGs were even mediocre they win both games
Tiny did some nice things
Being able to put Sanders at the 3 would be absolutely crazy
If he can hit that 3, this is going to be an unbelievable team
Someone needs to put together a highlight video of Sanders performance tonight.
Some good stuff out there on the floor.
by Brick's house on Jul 13, 2010 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions
He's too big to play the 3
How many 6’11" guys play SF? Lot more to it than hitting open jumpers…especially ball-handling skills.
by Frank Madden on Jul 13, 2010 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions
KG is a MAJOR exception to the rule....
Sanders can’t play the 3, but he looks to have ALL the tools to play the 4 OR 5.
A small forward by weight (lack thereof), not skill
by Brick's house on Jul 14, 2010 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions
I always remember him from playing around on NBA video games trying to make a squad of the tallest guys at each position
Eagerly awaiting SBN Madison.
I used to love the old NBA jam game that was awesome...
and the combination of players on teams that didnt have quite the star power was always kinda funny
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
Jeffries is one
But overall it rarely works…same as with tall PGs. Really tough to guard guys who are four or five inches shorter than you. And if you don’t have the ball-handling skills of the position it’s doubly tough.
Same as when people thought CV or Yi should play SF. CV could probably sacrifice less with it since he’s a terrible defender at every position and has a good handle, but Yi had zero perimeter skills (handle, passing) aside from a decent spot-up jumper. And taking away the outside shot is the one thing small guys CAN do.

There are enough differences between Gooden’s game and Sanders for them to complement each other.
by Brick's house on Jul 13, 2010 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Not all the time, but they are fairly complementary as long as a quality center isn’t on the floor.

Sanders will get his mpg....
It’ll be a great thing for him to be brought along slowly….. but if he keeps playing this, the Bucks are gonna have to figure out how to get min to him, Gooden, and Ersan
I think Ersan is the odd man out
Can we all agree about Sanders
That there is a lot there to work with. Getting a glimpse of some nice core skills.

Trade Ersan & a 2nd rounder for Sessions and Minnys 1st rounder next year
I’m sure it’ll be a top 5 pick : )
Not happening.
Minny doesn’t like 4’s or 5’s

I admit that I didn't see the game tonight...
But I hope that they don’t jettison Ersan.
He’s such a joy to watch.
When everyone complains about the way the NBA game is played, you can always say “Have you seen Ersan Ilyasova?”
Don't get me wrong, I love Ersan too.
But, if Sanders can be active on defense, provide weak side shot blocking and knock down the three point shot with room to grow, Ersan becomes a little more expendable than I ever thought he would be.
by Brick's house on Jul 13, 2010 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions

by Superelkman on Jul 13, 2010 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions
How will they manage to get proper playing time for Gooden, Ersan, AND Sanders???
Not to mention Luc….
Maybe they’re viewing Sanders as a C? At his point, he looks to be a more talented version of Gadz, so why not play him at C
That's what I've been wondering
If he can come in and give Gadz-like energy (while keeping his shoes tied) for 10-15 minutes while Bogues takes a breather, I think that would be ideal.
by ZV on Jul 13, 2010 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions
If they keep all their bigs, I'd think Sanders would have to be Boguts primary backup....
Allowing Ersan to be the 2nd PF – and Luc to be used as needed.
Sounds good to me!!
I'd like to see Sanders at the 4 tho
He’s 225, he’ll probably never be big enough to play C with the real pros.
Sanders looks like he will be able to add weight to his frame.
He has broad shoulders and a good base, he is not skinny like Daye.
by Brick's house on Jul 14, 2010 11:00 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I think each will get their minutes
It may not be clear how now or even at the beginning of the season, but someone will get hurt or go through a cold spell or some other down stretch, opening time for the others. Injuries and ineffectiveness often find a way to clear logjams.
Eagerly awaiting SBN Madison.
Yep
Nothing better than spending the offseason worrying about having too many guys…this stuff generally sorts itself out.

Ersan to OKC for E Maynor - straight up
They need a big who can score…. and Maynor looks like he’d start for a lot of teams. He’s a talented young guy.
OKC has a pretty crowded PF rotation with Ibaka, Jeff Green, DJ White and Collison.
If they trade Maynor, they would be in the same boat as the Bucks, as far as the back up point is concerned.
by Brick's house on Jul 13, 2010 9:33 PM CDT up reply actions
Bot none of OKCs bigs are really scorers, are they??
Maybe Green, but not the others
I wouldn't call Ersan a scorer either, more of a shooter.
According to 82games.com, 75% of his shots last year were jump shots, and 85% of those were assisted. He doesn’t create a lot of offense on his own.

They can use Luc as a 3rd PF/D specialist…. and Tiny will sit on the bench. A lot.

Like I said before, he has a moxy about him out there.
He threw up that weird, off balance three to tie the game at the end, it wasn’t pretty, but it just swished right in. He just seemed to be in the right place most of the time on defense. Really active, even blocked a Thabeet jump shot, which the refs called a foul, even though it was clean.
He has a smooth jumper with range out to the three point line. He passed the ball well, even had a drive and dish play.

Very well!! - 22/9 with 2blx & 2 assists..... also altered a few shots, as well
Same energy & hustle as last nite – but looked WAY more comfortable tonite.
Was easlily the best player on the floor most of the nite, IMO.
Keep in mind it's only Summer League - but you can say this much about Sanders...
Runs the floor extremely well – he’s cooridinated – has good form on his J – recognizes & passes out of double teams – good timing on his shot blocking – and a better overall feel/BB I.Q. than he got credit for coming out of college, IMO.
He just seems to be around every play – and usually in the right spot at the right time
AND..... Sanders is essentially playing w/o a PG
He’d REALLY shine if the PGs weren’t AWFUL!
Sanders would fit in really good with Nash in Phoenix
