Around SBN: Terry Collins, David Wright, And The Mets/Brewers Kerfuffle

I find it interesting that this article among many others seem to think that the recent moves by the Hammond will ruin everything that was great about the Bucks and that Hammond is going against his own philosophy by handing out big contracts to players who might not deserve it.

Pretty comprehensive.

A lot of the rankings I don’t agree with (Donnie Walsh at 14?) and I thought Sam Presti should be higher but…Hammond at 11? For reigning EotY? I would have thought at least top 5.

I thought Morey at 3 was a stretch.......

the guy is a top GM and all but still the team he has assembled has alot of question marks entering into this season……..of course the Yao Ming injury scenario is a major one can he ever play a full season and be dominant, Ariza was up and down having to be a main scoring option, the Landry for Martin deal could go either way, he committed some major cash to role playing guys in Lowry, Miller and as much as I like Scola $10 million a season over 5 years is major money

and he hasnt landed his big fish yet despite trying for Bosh this FA summer

I thought Presti should be in the top 3

Heck, I think Hammond could even be in the top five. But I think 11 is fair considering where the Bucks are right now.

See, I would've thought that the rankings would be based...

…less on where teams sit right now, and more on where they’ve come from. The reason Presti should be so high is he took a lame duck franchise (apologies to any ex-Sonics fans reading this) and even though they’ve only been the 8th seed in the playoffs, look at the complete culture change within the organisation. (Oh, and the fact they have a superstar on their roster).

Same with Hammond and the Bucks (sans superstar). Hammond has done the same things as Presti, but has gotten the Bucks further (in terms of playoff seeding) in one less year. He also had the Harris stench to cleanse, which he effectively has now eradicated with the Maggette trade.

Riley at #1? Come on! Tanking a season to have the best possible chance at landing DRose (and getting Beasley)? Letting DWade/Bron/Bosh collude amongst themselves and decide Miami is where the 3 of them will play? No way is Riley the best GM in the NBA at the moment.

Yeah, I really didn't agree with Riley being 1.

He’s a solid GM, but I don’t see him being the best by far.

The article also kind of judges moves before the season even starts… I mean, pushing Hammond and Buford back because of a signing or two?

Yep, I think Prada has weighted too much on 'potential' for the coming season.

I mean, what happens if The Amegos just can’t gel it together, or, horror of horrors, they DON’T win the championship this season? As it stands, Riley has done squat (except for the anomally that was the 2006 Championship).

And hats off to him for resisting the urge to put Kahn last

As bad as he is at his job (Really, REALLY bad) He at least has a plan. A bad one, but he has one. 26 was still too high though ;)

I would have thought it was a tossup...

…between Kahn and Larry for 30th.

its probably better to be shocking and rebuild with young draft picks than just be mediocre every year like the Pacers the last few years……….only thing Kahn seems to be making a poor effort of actually rebuilding…………

Presti lucked out with Durant being an absolute star, but his other moves just show what a head for the business he has….when you look at their payroll and what they achieved, every team bar the top few that are always contending would be envious of that position, still he tends to get a pass on the James Harden pick…..and the jury is still out on that one so far it doesnt look a great one but its way to early to call it

I would say 3 years to judge a draft pick.

ideally but most of the time it doesnt work out like that....its production right away

and i guess thats the hard thing, as a GM, you have a plan and vision but most of the time your under immense pressure to get results straight away and the media expects the same, so its a thankless job

I guess thats where the support of the ownership is important

Bogut is an exception, then.

yeah in a way......

one thing is that he wasnt a total bust early, he contributed in a number of ways, passing and rebounding mainly, and he was always a unselfish team guy, also the talent was there and he never had a coach really work him into the game plan adequately really and take advantage of his skills……the Bucks were pretty patient, and he has rewarded Hammond for the contract extension, hopefully the best is yet to come

I just hope this injury doesnt slow him down....havent really given it much thought

with all the excitement with the additions to the squad…..the big factor is will Bogut be able to anchor it all again and keep on improving?

the fact that after 4 months he is still on the mend kinda makes me nervous, though he had a very good season last year after returning from the back injury

"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."

by ILIKEBJ'S on Jul 26, 2010 2:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd expect his first 10 games...

…to be a bit patchy and inconsistent, just like his 1st 10 games or so last season. 4 months is not an issue. He still has 2 months until training camp, and then a month until the season opener. I think you’ll find he will be more concerned with a lack of ‘touch’ than how his injury heals. He is a notoriously good healer, generally coming back from injuries quicker than projected.

yeah I am out of touch with time.... I keep thinking we are a few weeks away from starting

when in fact like you said training camp is two months away

yeah kinda like getting your timing back after a lay off, anyway hope it doesnt take to long, I want his upward trend of improvement to continue along with the teams :)

I was hoping for....

17-18 ppg
10-11 rpg
2 apg
2.5 bpg

52 fg%
65 ft%

too much to ask?

Nope.

I still think he could be a 20ppg player for 3-4 seasons if the offense is set up properly. Would be content with the 17-18 you’re hoping for tho :) . I would be over the moon if he could avg 65%FT. He averaged 67% in his 2 years at Utah, so it’s not beyond him.

:)

I would have popped for 20 but I think with Bogut scoring wise…it’s small steps…..he isnt exactly demanding of the ball, but yeah he suddenly started nailing a few more free throws last year so if he can continue on that improvement his points will automatically get a boost
