UPDATED: 2010 Bucks Free Agency: the backup PG position
[Updated to reflect the available FA's as of 07/18]
Brewhoopers: After the verbal commitment to sign from John Salmons and Drew Gooden, the Bucks roster is close to solidified. Starting lineups and who will be considered 11th/12th man aside, the Bucks are a backup point guard away. Looking around the league, here's a look at the free agents (restricted and unrestricted) for the Bucks position to fill.
| Acie Law | Flip Murray |
| Jannero Pargo | Anthony Carter |
| Chucky Atkins | Will Bynum |
| Earl Watson | Bobby Brown |
| Jamaal Tinsley | Marcus Williams |
| Rafer Alston | Carlos Arroyo |
| Royal Ivey | CJ Watson |
| Chris Quinn | Cedric Jackson |
| Eddie House | Kevin Ollie |
| Mustafa Shakur | Anthony Johnson |
| Jason Williams | Allen Iverson |
| Travis Diener | Patrick Mills |
| Earl Boykins | Javaris Crittenton |
Luke Ridnour is on this list based on my belief that while we are in play for him, I wouldn't put it past John Hammond to be looking elsewhere. Not to mention our budget might not fit Ridnour's desire.
So what say you, bloggers? Who do you want to see in a Bucks uniform next year?

I'm tempted to say Boykins because of the humor factor ;)
I know Fisher is probably going back to the Lakers but how much do you think he would get? Certainly wouldn’t mind him as a backup.
Otherwise, Ridnour would still be my number one choice, but probably not going to happen. I’d leave it down to:
-Duhon (Skiles factor…)
-Kyle Lowry
-Will Bynum
That said, if teams fall out of the Ridnour sweepstakes (lol) than we might have a chance.

just wanna clarify
that duhon is the worst pg in the league.
twitter.com/aighttho
http://aightthen.tumblr.com/
ive had worse ;)
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
Experience
I think any veteran would be fine, if we are ready to make a push you want to have a steadying influence out there, maybe even a guy with playoff experience. Arroyo, Boykins Tinsley, Earl Watson, Jason Williams would all do I think. We dont’ have a lot to spend so we aren’t going to get a game changer, just a steady player would do fine. I think we still need a 3rd centre as well though, someone to play garbage time and to be 6 fouls on nights when Bogut and/or Gooden gets into foul trouble. Hoping for KT there.
no offence but thats the randomest list of felons, journeyman, undersized, washed up, injured, no talent, had talent but wasted it, head case, shoot first, cant shoot.....bunch of players ever
lol

apologies to a couple such as Shaun Livingston who I have nothing but good thoughts for I hope someone gives the guy a contract
I personally wouldnt mind though he probably needs a team where he can get a few more minutes?
having said that I dont think he shoots particularly well, and will always be a red flag with his history of injuries unfortunately
Livingston isn't ideal for this team unless we have a vet 3rd stringer
but it looks like that’s Darrington Hobson’s role and if Livingston went down, not sure Hobson is ready to play 2nd string PG. If they signed Deiner (or someone comparable to Deiner who only demands a <$1mil contract) and Livingston, I’d give my wholehearted approval. Letting Livingston get the primary 2nd string minutes, but having Deiner just in case.
Ideally...
Veteran, three point range, bit bigger/stronger than Brandon. Realistically, we’re not going to get all of those in one package for the BAE…
I'll say it again. Patty Mills
Give the boy some court time and you will see what he can do – Patty Mills gets my vote.
He would be a great backup to Jennings. Already has chemisty with Bogut.
Sure he is raw, but so are diamonds before they are cut and polished.
I like Patty Mills, and his talent is intriguing - but most teams would wisely stick him in the D league for a while.
I’m sure Milw would, too. The Bucks need an exp PG behind BJ… atleast this year.
Which Bobby Brown is that....
Wife beater Bobby Brown, Bobby Brown of Frank Zappa fame, or the stiff on the Clips?
As much as I don't care for Jason Williams....
He had an excellent year last year backing up Nelson in Orlando – 20mpg, 6ppg, 4ppg, 44%fg, 38% on 3pointers….. He actually might be the best backup PG available, IMO – and might be had for around the BAE
I just hope he’s lost his attitude from his younger days…
If the Bucks keep Ridinour they are a top team in the West
if they sign Duhon or Watson, I feel they will miss his valuable production and be a worse team. Ridinour was huge last year, had a breakout year and he is going for just 3 mil a year, you can’t pass on that.
Fuck the Lakers...Oh sorry the Fakers
Hard to say
You had a breakout year @ 29. I think most people think it was an anomaly, as well he’s more of a shooter than facilitator I think, shoting hopefully is less needed this year. If Signing Ridnour is the difference between success and failure…………..the Bucks karmais out of whack. BTW we still play in the East.
I'd be good with Jason though
Think I mentioned him in a post nearer the top. Really need a guy with experience and who knows how to play at certain times. On a different note with hopefully a better O this year does BJ shoot less(hopefully).
I'm tempted to play the "attitude" card here.

I agree w/ you about Brandons shooting...
If he can raise his FG% and APG – while taking less shots….. he’ll probably be an all-star. With his vision & passing skills, and the offense now on this team, he really should avg 7+apg
Think it's going to take a while
To play out though, nothing going to happen til the big boys are off the board
I think once Ridnour officially snubs whatever the Bucks offer...
They’ll go get their guy… whoever it is.
I think we wait until the lux tax level is official
Maybe Bucks just holding out until they know how much money is available?

touche : )
But I’d think after the way JH gushed about him, they’d atleast make him an offer…. maybe not.
Anyone think it would be worth taking a flyer
On Randy Foye. If he ever lived up to his drafted position you would have a bargain. Haven’t seen him play much as Wiz and Wolves games rare up here. I know he can play either guard, just not sure how well. Any thoughts?
I'd love to get Foye
Not sure if he’d sign for the BAE considering he has a pretty valuable skillset.
I don't know much about Foye, other than he's a higly mediocre combo guard.
But I’d like him for the right price – he’s a talented dude. It’s almost unfair to judge him by the horrible, dysfuntional teams he has been on. He’d probably shine coming off the bench for a good team.
I also think he’d cost more than Ridnour, given his age & stats.
Shhh
..Your making Hammond excited

Foye isn't the answer
sure, he’s been on some dysfunctional teams…but he’s part of the reason those teams haven’t functioned efficiently. He’s horrible at moving the ball or creating plays.
Foye would be an excellent addition, if the price was low enough..... but i doubt it will be.
And that would OFFICIALLY make the Bucks the deepest team in the league….. by far.
If the Bucks are gonna go into the tax this year, Foye might be a better choice than Ridnour, but he may prove to be more of a SG than PG.
But maybe he slips through the cracks, and the checked shirt gets him for around the BAE… which would be a STEAL!!
Agreed
Living in DC, I can only go to Wizard games and trust Foye can play the PG spot and nail open jumpers consistently.
the Bucks have just over 3mil to spend on FAs....
Get a backup PG for the BAE and offer K Thomas the vets minimum…. If he gets a better deal, let him walk.
Regardless on how the situation w/ the bigs shake out… KT would be a good mentor to Sanders, and a nice insurance policy to have on the roster for cheap, IMO.
So long, Duhon...

Wow, Orlando really likes to spend money. I liked Duhon, but not at that price.
Now this signing makes me wonder if Orlando intends to resign Reddick. I think he is a goner unless they can find someone to take on Vince Carter.
I feel sorry for the next team that thinks Carter
Is the final piece that will push them over the top….

fair enough....
When LBJ re-signs w/ Cleveland, maybe they’ll bring VC there to join the continuing caravan of washed up former stars to help get LBJ a titile….
Bahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!! : )
So....... if Duhon is fetching just under 4mil a year....
I think the checked shirt is gonna have to pull a rabbit out of his hat to get a decent backup PG w/ the BAE…. I just hope they don’t overpay a guy like Ridnour.
And the Duhon deal is a great example of why I hope they move on a guy sooner than later – or they will almost definately overpay.
Jason Williams agent already said they expect a raise from the 1.3mil he made last year – so I don’t know if the BAE would cut it.
I still don’t know if i want him as a Buck – he was really D bag back in the day, but he’s 34 now, so maybe he’s mellowed….. plus, Skiles will kick his ass if he stepped out of line.
It would be interesting to see how Skiles & Nate Robinson would work.... if at all.
It would make for good theatre, if nothing else : )
Robinson
Is best suited as a 2nd 2nd option.
Does anyone really see the Bucks signing one of the players from the list above???
I don’t….. Maybe Duhon, but he’s gone.
I’m guessing the checked shirt makes a trade???
Seems like it'd have to be part of a bigger deal
I don’t think anyone currently on the roster is an obvious guy you move for a veteran backup PG. You can always get someone from the list above off the scrap heap though, so no pressure to make a move quickly.

hoopshype.com is reporting that Knicks are interested in Ridnour to be their starter...
and they have also “reached out” to Kurt Thomas. It also appears J Williams will return to Miami.
This free agent point guard watch is becoming a game of lowered expectations.
At this rate, the Bucks will be rolling out a D leaguer as their backup point. Of course, looking at a guy like Sundiata Gaines making an impact at Utah late last year, maybe that wouldn’t be such a bad thing. At least it would be a cheap option.
Realistically though, Jennings still needs a stable vet as a backup.
this market Ridnour is pretty much priced out of our range.....when these deals started going down I kinda felt that
cant see him signing for under $5 million a year now really…….we may see his career shooting year as a one off but its a business for him and his manager will leverage those numbers as he should to get a great deal for him
Yeah... I'm actually concerned about the backup PG spot
I think LR is long gone – and if the Bucks don’t move quick, they won’t even get the best remaing bargain guys, and may have to get a D leaguer. Yikes!!
hmm I know a steady guy is needed but I think we can find someone we like to fill that role
my preference is Earl Watson because he can stick defensively but he cant shoot a lick……but lets be honest before Ridnour played under Skiles he was seen as a bit of a soft offensive and in fact he was benched for Watson in their Seattle days because of his defensive frailties so if we can get someone with a bit of talent Skiles can make mould them into what he Needs….im pretty confident we will be ok there
also Duhons contract are people that shocked???
honestly im kinda yeah ok shrugging my shoulders, after the contracts so far Im figuring thats about average in this surreal market, dude is a pretty solid backup pg just asked to do too much in NY
I know Amare will get his numbers and highlights and will once in awhile dominate a game but I think he is no way a max guy and is more interested in his stats and all star image than winning I think thats a horrible contract
I agree....
Amare will NOT be the same player w/o Nash serving it up to him – but his deal STILL isn’t as bad as J Johnsons – close, but JJ wins.
And w/ the offensive talent on this team, I doubt JH gets some chump to backup BJ – the checked shirt will make a move…
But he'll still be really good.
He was a 20 point scorer even before Nash returned to Phoenix, albeit less efficient.

no argument Amare cares about his image enought to be really good.....he could be pretty special tho if he had that killer instinct
but he is a nice complimentary player….yeah interesting to see how much the Nash effect has on him and on Hakim Warrick…..running with Nash Warrick could put up 15/16 ppg I guess
I question whether Amare will be worth the premium over Lee
Amare has a better chance of luring another big FA and will energize the fan base a bit, but on the court I don’t think he’s going to be that much better than Lee (if at all). They could bring back Lee if they don’t get anyone else, but who knows.
Wonder who would play C in that scenario...Lee or Amare?

That would be a bad move
They’d look like the ATL Hawks starting a PF at C. Just doesn’t win championships and eventually one of them would have to roll to the 2nd string if they wanted to set their sights one the championship. You see how Bogut works Lee, Perkins, etc. Just not a good idea.
Probably good for a yr or two.. but I view Amare as a player whos best days are behind him....
His knees will eventually fail him – and when he loses his explosiveness – he’ll be an average player, at best.
I hate to say it... but given the Bucks budget, they might be wise to grab T Diener... now.
Plus…. it’d be good PR material – “local boy comes home” – and all that crap…..
dont no much about the dude but im sure he could surprise
as long as the guy can take care of the ball and shoot an open jumper he should be fine, make an effort to stay in front his man on defense and he will be A-ok
I wouldn't worry too much
About a back-up PG, there are only so many teams that will sign the best of them, there will be something serviceable later. And if not, seeing as Charlie Bell played a little point for us, I’m sure the Warriors could be persuaded to deal him back to us.
Okay I’m JK
No love for Eddie House? C'mon guys...
In all seriousness, though, this is what we have to choose from, fellas. Aside from a D-League pickup or a trade, this is our pool of players. Personally, I’m ecstatic that Duhon got picked up by the Magic. Not that my second favorite team overpaid an at best second string PG, but that Milwaukee wasn’t the team to do so. I’d love to see Derek Fisher in a Bucks uniform. I think he could be a mentor for Jennings as well as a solid backup. He’s no longer guaranteed in LA now that they picked up Steve Blake (can’t believe I’m really typing that), but if he’d be up for a change in scenery, I’d probably take him over Ridnour at this point. Assuming we could afford him.
If we could afford Ridnour, I'd still prefer him over House.
But yes, House is a legitimate option, but we’ll have to sacrifice some ball movement on the offensive end.

House is a good option
No less ball movement than Ridnour. Knocks down the open J. Great for playing the inside-out game.
House doesn't seem like a Skiles kind of player....
Streaky, No D, questionable shot selection, not much of a passer….
I don’t like him as the backup PG – but I do like him as the designated shooter off the bench.
Had his best year or two in D'Antoni's offense at PHO IMO...
…career 1.6 AST in about 17mpg…enough said…

Ouch 1.6 career assists?
That’s frightening. Still, considering Jennings will probably play close to 40MPG this year, Eddie House as backup firepower wouldn’t be too bad.
Diener – would he be considered the poor man’s Luke Ridnour?
I think that's fair
Which would make Diener a homeless, urine-soaked man’s Steve Nash. Or something.

I think Milly would love CJ Watson
I know CJ wants to try to sign into a situation with more guaranteed minutes…and he’s restricted (at some number, GS would certainly match)….but the kid can shoot and he’s tough and he can handle the ball as well as most of the guys on that list.
that wouldn't get CJ's name on an offer sheet, but
considering the new cap number, what if Milly offered CJ the same deal that Duhon just signed in Orlando (4 years, $15ish mil)? The first question is…do you even like the idea of Milly pursuing CJ over some of the other potential targets (i.e., Diener, Earl Watson, J-Will, House, etc.). I think CJ would be a great addition.
ignore that last post
I just read your article on the cap figure and realized I had a brain fart when I posted the suggestion of offering a Duhon-type contract to CJ. To get CJ, it would have to be by way of sign and trade and my guess is that the Warriors would want Ersan (although we were kind enough to take Maggette’s contract off of their books…so perhaps, if CJ wanted to come to Milly and Kurt Thomas or Stackhouse was willing to play ball, Milly could get the sign and trade done with one of them). Also, I’m guessing there would be some sort of issue with base level compensation for CJ that would screw up that last idea. In short, CJ would be a nice addition, but I don’t see pursuing him as a realistic possibility.
Travis Diener...
Here are his stats from 07-08 and 08-09 when he actually got meaningful playing time…
SEASON FG% FT% P/40 R/40 A/40 TS% Ast TO Usg Reb PER
2007-08 .370 .901 13.5 3.4 7.4 49.4 32.7 7.2 16.8 4.6 12.24
2008-09 .413 .800 11.5 4.8 6.8 55.5 37.1 6.4 13.1 6.6 13.74
A couple things to like...
Ast % of 32.7% and 37.1% – fits in perfectly with a 2nd unit with Maggette who will be looking to score….
PER of around 13… not going to find a value like that for the minimum…
TO% of 7.2% and 6.4% – he is very careful with the ball which is what we need…
We already have enough guys off the bench who can score, rebound, and help us out…
Diener would be a good team guy who would fit in, set his teammates up, and not hurt you at all… plus he would only get 10 mins a game…
TD would look to be a solid pickup....
I’d still rather have Arroyo or maybe Earl Watson… but TD would probably be OK.
Biggest concern is defense IMO
That was my main issue with Ridnour backing up BJ—both guys are super small, and Ridnour’s not super quick either. Would be nice if we had a more physical defender who wasn’t Royal Ivey.
I think at the minimum though you can't expect much more from a guy than to have one nba skill...
so it would be tough to find everything we want in a backup PG
I am still convinced...
…that the PG/C conundrum will be solved through a trade…one that JH has been working on for months…and, yes, I am an eternal optimist ;)

Maybe this is my bias against signing hometown guys for the fans* coming through
But counting on Diener as the 2nd string PG seems like counting on a college small forward to be a point guard in the NBA – very, very risky. I’d rather see them sign a veteran guy.
*I know no one is saying that anymore but it always annoys me when fan support is cited as a reason to sign someone. Fans will come to see a winner, not a Diener.
Eagerly awaiting SBN Madison.
I agree.... I hate the whole "local boy comes home" crap....
But TD actually put up decent numbers in Ind. when he was given playing time…
I’d like to see them deal for a PG, but if they go on the cheap – TD is a good as any of the other UFA PGs…… which ain’t sayin much!
i could care less about the fact he is a wisconsin kid...
i have shown you he is a good value for the minimum regardless of where he’s from…
Sure... he's a good value for the minimum... but will he sign for that??? What is he worth???
I don’t know what the vets minimum is for guys w/ his exp – but it’s a lot less than the BAE, which is just over 2mil per…
I seriously doubts he signs for peanuts – and the Bucks probably won’t offer much more than peanuts…
word on the street is that the Bucks offered Ridnour a 3yr - 12million dollar deal with a team option in the 3rd year...
I'd be down w/ that deal.... But I'd be a bit surprised if LR is....
Couldn’t he get more money/years from another team???
I agree w/ B.C. Dave - I think JH trades for a PG
Esprecially considering they have ONE pg – and FIVE bigs…. SIX, if Gallon makes the team
Anyhoo… here’s my wishlist for the UFAs:
Earl Watson
Arroyo
A Carter
A Johnson
Diener
Any of the above should be OK…. but I doubt the checked shirt is gonna go on the cheap for BJs backup…. I say he trades.
he won't play more than 5 minutes a game even if he isn't in the D-League all season..
too young, raw, and out of shape at this point…
i think they will but will be inactive most nights...
hopefully they prove me wrong but they are mere 2nd rounders…
by Superelkman on Jul 13, 2010 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions
I think so, too.... he appears to be a bit goofy... but he's 6'9" 300lbs w/ interesting skills.....
If nothing else…. they could stick him in the D league and see what happens. Of all the rookies, he’s the one I see spending time there – just to get playing time/conditioning.

Guys that could backup Mr. Jennings
CJ Watson = previous chemistry with Corey Maggette. (similar game to BJ3) just a poor mans version.
Rafer Alston = bring back “skip to my lou” he could reserect M. Redd with old stories of riding the pine while the ol’ milwaukee big 3 played. Anyone remember that National T.V game against the knicks when M. Redd went nuts.
Will Bynum = He’s a good player simple as that. Detroit just sucked.
Kyle Lowry = He’s a good player simple as that.
We should sign Ibrahim Jaaber
aka the guy Jennings backed up at Roma. He’s playing for the Lakers summer league team.
No idea if he’s any good, mind you, but it would be funny to see happen.

Seriously.... if they sign LR, they'll have him, Flynn, and Sessions - not to mention Rubio
Could Sessions be had for cheap? Maybe a 2nd rounder or two
His deal has 3yrs @ 4mil per left…. which ain’t bad for a quality backup – we paid LR 6.5mil last year.
is this serious?
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
no fucking way... if we are going to pay that for a middling pg i'd rather just pay ridnour...

i just really think with the makeup of our 2nd unit we need a guy who can hit open jumpers and play defense...
don’t get me wrong… we could do far worse as far as backup pg’s go… but for the price ridnour is a much better fit…
by Superelkman on Jul 13, 2010 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions
Kahn loves PGs.... and he is a moron.... so I'm guessing they sign Ridnour
Giving them Flynn, Ridnour, Sessions, AND the draft rights to Rubio….. man, this guy is actually worse than L Harris, me thinks.
dude first McHale now Kahn......at least Milwaukee learnt

PATTY MILLS FOR BACKUP PG!!!
I hope the Bucks make a run at getting Patty Mills because I’m pretty sure that he won’t stick with the Blazers because they have a logjam at that position and Mills seems like the odd man out.
by ignoranceisbliss on Jul 13, 2010 1:05 AM CDT reply actions
Can Mills run the point? Isn't he mainly a scorer???
We need a solid vet behind BJ, IMO.
Someone that plays D, and can disribute the ball… the Bucks don’t need a scorer off the bench, they’ll have plenty of offense w/ Maggette, CRD, and Ersan….
Yeah, Patty is definitely an 'energy' scorer at this point...
…he does have some great skills but really needs to refine his passing and ball protection (too many TO’s). As much as it kills me to say it, I don’t think he would be a good fit with the Bucks at the moment.
His footwork has really improved and he keeps in front of the ball carrier on D, but he is too small to not be a great passer at the moment.

i dont think it is important that our backup pg is a distributor as much as he can shoot 3's and play D...
that 2nd unit will have guys that can score on their own without a good pg to set them up… especially with how few minutes the backup pg figures to play…

If JH goes w/ an available FA - I'm hoping it's E Watson or A Carter....
Both are solid vets who would know their roles, and fit in nicely….
I would definitely take Earl in a heartbeat...
…if we can snag him for not too much. Brings some toughness to the PG rotation for sure, plus he’s a what…6-7 year vet?

ready to go vet, good on the ball defender, solid distributor, cant shoot with any range but no one is perfect at this stage

yes dont see much of Indiana at all which is usually a good thing I imagine....
but my bad too…………okay so he once was a decent defender, so now we can call him a savvy competitor and okay distributor…….
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
if you read recent scouting reports and look at his adjusted defensive ratings over the last few years you'll see that earl is no longer a good defender...
he is getting old and losing his atheltic ability….
he is also an erratic shooter from outside…
what he can do is take care of the ball and distribute however…
IMO, not the best fit but we could do worse at the backup PG spot I suppose…
by Superelkman on Jul 13, 2010 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions
EW was also the starter in Indy for much of last season....
So the team would be in good hands if anything were to happen to BJ…. worst case scenario.
He's a pass-first point.
Which with our sudden scoring ‘prowess’, makes him even more valuable IMO. I think you said in an earlier post that you really hope BJ can focus more on his passing than needing to score…I hope so too, takes a lot of pressure off him to be ‘the guy’ all the time and gives him a chance to set things up and use his great court vision more to the team’s advantage.

T-Wolves trade Jefferson to Utah for a 1st rounder
I don’t care if you want to get rid of salary, you don’t trade Al Jefferson for a 1st round pick. If there’s one thing Kahn doesn’t need, it’s another 1st rounder.
"Now, Maggette's one of those where when he catches, it's probably going to go up--Not to a teammate." --Jon McGlocklin, 11/14/09
hmm I dont know just getting rid of that contract is probably best for the Wolves
probably good for Jefferson too, anyway what does Kahn care he wasnt a pg, or european so out with him
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
The silliest thing about this trade, I think
Was probably that Kahn traded him because he felt bad for him for some reason and was more concerned with where he went and how he’d fit in there then what the Wolves got in return. That’s a pretty crappy way to run a team. See here:

haha maybe marketing and hype wise....not sure about actual productive play wise
how many 19 year old pg’s make an impact immediately in the NBA………….
I think Kahn just likes having the rights to Rubio so he can get a converstaion with every other GM who would otherwise hang up on him because the T’Wolves roster is littered with trash? I actually think its partly true the guy is that much of an idiot
if they ever actually got Rubio to play for them they wouldnt know what to do
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
Yeah...a VERY tongue in cheek remark I made ;)
I’m sure Kahn knows what he wants to do, just doesn’t have the ‘nous’, savvy or contacts to make things happen. Unfortunately, they’re probably the 3 main tools an NBA GM needs to have to be successful. I mean, Hammond has all of those in abundance…especially the contacts.

I cant believe Ridnour went for the T'Wolves??
I know we question Kahn’s mentality but Ill questions Luke’s….the Wolves are a rabble of an organisation and he could have landed a 3 year deal for around $12 so for an extra season he jumped ship to the wolves??? to back up Johnny Flynn
surely it cant be all about dollars there has to be some job satisfaction…thats staggering really

Wolves and collection of PGs
Kahn can’t think he needs that many of them
I'm taking my talents to.......The Golden Arches!
Kahn has outdone himself this summer I have to admit......
he passed on De Marcus Cousins…..then trades Jefferson, signs Darko to a reasonably big contract in Darko terms when no one else had any interest
drafts a small forward at pick 4, and then Lazar Hayward…… then trades for Beasley and Webster
then adds another veteran pg
they have alot of pieces that just dont add up
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
I wouldnt have thought but plenty of GM's just seem out of their depth
whats their projected starting line up?
Darko, Love, Wes Johnson/Beasley, Brewer, Flynn???
thats pretty trashy….at least if they let them run and stopped with this triangle nonsense they could get up and down the court……Love is a nice piece and Brewer and Flynn can get up and down the court…….
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."

Ramon Sessions vs Luke Ridnour
Bucks obviously won’t trade for Sessions if they won’t pay Ridnour the same contract as Sessions. Both $4mil/yr for at least the next 3 years, plus Ridnour is much more veteran savvy and consistent.
Why is Ridnour going to MN to play back-up PG to Flynn? or Rubio when he finally comes? I thought he was leaving Milwaukee because he wanted more minutes than MKE could offer.
Luke took the payday..... I'm sure he could care less about mpg
At his age, this was his last chance for a big payday, so he took the best offer….
You're right, it doesn't make sense from a basketball standpoint.
Maybe Minnesota liked the way Ridnour played with BJ and wanted someone like that for Flynn. I think this move is going to hurt Ridnour on the court. He had the ideal situation here in Milwaukee, aside from being able to start, and left.

Plus he was just sentenced to two yrs probation – so if he slips up, he ’d be gone. No thanks…. plus he might try to sleep w/ someone elses mom ; )
Hide Jennings from him...
And hide his mother…

For the most part, he seems liked by teammates and coaches
His personal and legal problems are a big deal and kinda scary, but to his credit, he does seem to do a decent job of keeping them away from the court/locker room.
Unfortunately, I think he’s even less of a true PG than Mo Williams.

Head signed w/ N.O. last week for 2.5mil per for 2yrs
But the Hornets yanked the deal because of “medical reasons” – The suttlebutt is that they yanked it after they fired their GM because now they don’t want to pay.
I’m guessing he could be had for the BAE???
Weird.
Well, Head isn’t a terrible player by any stretch of the imagination. I’d be content with him. Not sure I would want him to see a ton of minutes though.

He avg 17mpg last year, and put up decent numbers....
They could prob play him & BJ together, since he seems to be a bit of a “combo” guard
I think he’d be better than the remaining FAs available – [not counting Arroyo or J Williams, since they dont wanna leave Fla.]
He also shoots 39% on 3s...
Gotta like that : )
He's not the best passer, which could be a problem
But he’s been solid everywhere he’s been, and stats might suggest he’s been an okay defender as well. Yeah, I guess I would be okay with this. Do you have a link?

they will just run a set offense once they get into the halfcourt...
there aren’t many pg that can really create in the league in general and especially when you are looking at backups… they all usually have one solid skill otherwise they would be starting…
once they get in the halfcourt they will iso Maggette or run a set… the pg just needs to not turn the ball over, give effort on D, and hit open 3’s…
remember guys… this is a guy who will be playing 12 minutes a game

If he's the best we can get, fine.
He’s a very good outside shooter, but he’s more of an undersized SG than a point.
And Charlie Bell will always be the poster child for undersized SG’s for me.

I agree..
But right now Earl Watson seems to be the cream of the crop as far as traditional PGs… and that ain’t sayin much.
Maybe Skiles can get LH to be more of a pure PG?

maybe... maybe not
Bogut has said repeatedly that Skiles was the difference in his play last year…. different scenario, but certain players can be formed to fit the system, IMO.
Besides, if LH became C Bell, Hammond will dump him quick!
But it's different
Using the talents you have within a system is one thing, but learnin new talents is something else. Luther has not shown himself to be a good distributor throughout his career, I would be surprised if Skiles could suddenly teach him that.

OK... go get Diener....
and watch him get torched by sub-par players…
Seriously… who’s available at the BAE that would be good??? Not many, IMO.
It's not really out opinions that count though
Milwaukee will sign who they feel is the best available PG for the price. I am of the opinion that they would want more of a play-maker than a shooter that’s all.

yeah thats what I figure....
most guys have some talent to get a chance in the NBA but what they get lost in the system especially if you end up on a team with poor management, and a coach who isnt interested in playing rookies who cant perform straight away………..in the right program with a specific role that doesnt expect too much of them they can be valuable role players
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
It's just a shame that there doesn't seem to be enough good franchises/head coaches around...
…to get these types of players to the point where they are consistent and productive. I know that there is only so much talent that can be turned into a ‘superstar’, but there are some coaches/systems out there that seem to consistently take ‘busts’ or ‘rejects’ and manage to bring out the best in them. If you go back say 40 years, before the money became so MUCH and players (IMO anyway) were more humble and focused on being better players (as oppposed to being wealthier players), I betcha they were able to bring out the best in players because it was their prime focus.
Did any of that make sense? I’m not sure if I actually made my point clear (or what my original point was for that matter – too bad, not gonna retype that rant again!) ;)

I think alot of it is to do with poor ownership....
guys that want to meddle in team matters to massage their ego and want to ‘run’ a sports team because thats just what they want to throw their money at for the cache….
if your a smart owner you hire people with excellent credentials and knowledge and let them get on with it……..
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
also I suppose franchise expansion has diluted the talent pool of upper management
but really the Nets hiring a guy like Billy King is just nonsensical there are very decent understudies around the league who like Hammonds worked in a good environment and in a succesful organisation…..you cant beat that grounding I think
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
Speaking of which, according to FanHouse the Suns are still looking at Weltman
Hopefully they don’t hire him….

not to mention the FA’s they managed to ‘snare’

after seeing Scola's deal I think Gooden's deal looks better and better
I really like Scola and what he brings to the table but he is a couple of years older than Gooden their numbers are not that dissimilar, Scola is a bit more cluey on defence I guess and the rockets obviously value and rate what he brings but still Gooden looks decent value these days

Hammond ‘jumped the gun’ by grabbing him early? I don’t think so! And all these plaudits for Pat Riley getting The Three Amigos to Miami? Puuu-Leeeease! He did squat, except put some $$$ together! Wade, Bosh and Bron schemed this one themselves!

yeah Gooden looks a decnt deal for sure......always been productive numbers wise
if Skiles can get him to focus enough on the basics we should be looking decent up front………Scola is a nice complimentary player no doubt but a $10 million a year player not really….still I suppose when guys like Amir Johnson and Tyrus Thomas are getting substantial deals for limited production…..at least with guys like Scola & Gooden you know what they will bring night in night out
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
I think of LH like this - similar to Ridnour but less of a natural PG/passer
They’re both good shooters, but LH has better size & D…. he’ll also cost about half of what LR got.
I have faith that Skiles could get him to be a solid PG off the bench
I vote Jeremy Lin for our backup point.
Did anyone see him match up with John Wall:
http://nbaoffseason.com/post/819421951/jeremy-lin-eats-john-walls-lunch-brainworks
I know he is on the Dallas summer league team, but they have a full cupboard of guards with Kidd, Terry, Barea, Roddy B, and Dominique Jones.
I am only half serious about this, but that kid can ball.
Looks good, doesn't he?

"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
Back-up PG
I just think it’s too much to ask for the Bucks coaching staff to have to develop a rookie back-up PG and a sophomore starting PG at the same time with no veteran player assistance.
It’s probably not good for Jennings development to bring in a rook behind him. A few rooks look like they have potential (patty mills, jeremy lin), but the Bucks need a PG who needs less coaching IMO.
I've settled on my choice
and it is Mustafa Shakur. I thought he looked impressive in the D-League last year. He’s a real point guard, defense is NBA ready, and he’s a fantastic 3 point shooter.
Most importantly, he has the coolest name ever.

I know you guys have been jamming on who the back-up point should be, any talk in here if Luther Head doesn’t stick about CJ Watson??
I have had a boner over him the last few weeks, 27.5 minutes per
10.9 ppg 2.8apg 2.6rpg 1.58 spg
Basically he is kinda that SG trapped in the PG body, a little younger, better Luther Head IMO

anyway our ‘options’ are slowly slowly getting smaller…….I guess guys like Head, CJ Watson, Earl Watson are guys who can step and play a role straight away…they know the pro ropes and what it takes to play a 82 game season…..the ups and downs…..alot of the other unknown guys are a real punt basically 3rd stringers who would really have to have surprise to be a genuine back up…….cant see Hammonds taking that kinda risk after gaining so much depth in other positions this summer

According to Woelfel, Gooden’s contract is fully guaranteed… But I’m keeping the hope alive. The Bucks are also supposedly looking at Earl Watson, who I think would be a great fit on this team. And Jeff Weltman might be the frontrunner for the Phoenix job.

Earl Watson is a decent compromise.....its a safe move......I suppose for the Bucks who are built to win its the smart one
Im still down with a guy who has a few hidden talents that we can unearth….its a bit riskier no doubt……….

Once Gooden emerges as the PF the teams has lacked for yrs, fans won't care about his deal
Nor should they…. it’s pretty modest in the big NBA picture, IMO.
Gooden is 28....has always produced solidly......
If we dont expect to much he will be a fine fit…….i like the combo of Bogut and Gooden its pretty solid in a weird kinda way………..before we were undersized up front now we have legit size and with Sanders some great athleticism so I think we are pretty set
