Bigger Jerk? You Decide
After all of the hoop-la regarding LeBron's decision and the aftermath of Dan Gilbert's comments, I thought about it this morning and was trying to decide which of them came across as the bigger jerk. LeBron for doing what he's done since his season was ended so abruptly. Or was it Gilbert for his classless knee-jerk reaction to LeBron's decision? I think Gilbert's tirade may be a bit of a CYA move as the Cavs are likely doomed to failure for the next few years or was it sincere? I'll let you the bloggers decide, who is the biggest jerk.

By the way
I vored Gilbert, can’t stand LeBron but Gilbert would have come off better if he kept the Comic Sans to himself.
I'm with you on Gilbert
LeBron has been a tool (he’ll do well with Bosch I assume ILBJ’s?), but for a wealthy, apparently educated and savvy GM to completely go off tap like that…the only thing I can think of as a potential positive from it, was that he is attempting to galvanise the fans behind the Cavs and gain some solidarity moving forward.

dan gilbert
but if it was a vote for bigger prima dona, lebron in a landslide.
LeBron leaving could have been avoided if Gilbert hadn't given LeBron everything he wanted.
But I still voted for LeBron. Gilbert’s not the one who held the NBA hostage for weeks and humiliated Cleveland an National TV.
And to think this guy almost bought the Brewers…

Holding the NBA hostage
I don’t think that’s all on LeBron, there were plenty of other signings and NBA news to talk about. He’s just the biggest name out there. I think blaming him for holding the NBA hostage because he didn’t announce his decision at 12:01am on July 1 is akin to blaming him for being talented. You can do it, but what else is he going to do?
It’s all a farce. I don’t understand how he humiliated Cleveland on national TV. Some cities were going to be disappointed either way. If he announced he was staying in Cleveland, would going on national TV have been a good move? Regardless, I think it had gotten to the point where he looked bad no matther how he broke the news. If he announced his decision via Twitter, he would be ripped for not facing the cameras or reporters. If he called a press conference, that would have been live on national TV, too.
Like I said, it’s all a farce. I have a hard time getting too worked up about something so surreal. The only thing that gets me is the Cleveland owner making an ass of himself.
Eagerly awaiting SBN Madison.
I guess I can't really blame him specifically for that.
But he was certainly not doing anything to calm the storm. It really shouldn’t be asked of him to do that but the way the media handled this was pretty pathetic.
I guess “humiliation” comes from the fact he grew up in that area and ha basically sold them out in such a publicized way. It’s his decision to make, but not this way.
I would hope the NBA could look at this and say “We don’t want to go through this again” But this is going to happen again. Unless the NBA changes it’s image, there will be more LeBrons.

I'm not at all convinced the NBA is upset at the way this went
The NBA has been criticized as superstar-oriented over team-oriented for years, so they aren’t losing much, if anything, there. Everyone’s been talking about the NBA (via LeBron) for weeks in the middle of baseball season and the World Cup. LeBron’s getting more flak than the league is at this point, so they’re sort of reaping the benefits while LeBron shoulders the blame. There are always more stars to market.
Maybe I’m too cynical, but I don’t think LeBron sold Cleveland out. I don’t think he owed the city anything for having grown up there. Yeah, he’s the hometown superstar and he left through an ESPNgasm which his camp certainly helped plan, but I think that goes more to your point about the media (which I agree with). Players leave in free agency. If he was a middling veteran leaving his hometown, it wouldn’t even be news outside of the city. But he’s talented, he’s been hyped up so long, and the summer of 2010 LeBron has been hyped up so much, it couldn’t be anything else.
No one involved is looking too good today, but no one has a reason to stop this sort of thing from happening again (except maybe the Cavs owner, but even he’s probably improving his standing in Cleveland).
Eagerly awaiting SBN Madison.
I dont think he sold them out leaving thats his right........
but the whole glorification of the process and holding everyone ransom and the whole FA tour junket thing and the ESPN show was very poor taste…..but this is the way the Cavs have enabled James his whole pro career so Gilbert is a bit fancy now throwing the book at the ‘monster’ they helped create
ESPNgasm...
…Hahahahah! Love it!

The wrong way to do it was saying,
“I’m taking my game to South Beach”
He’s such a follower. He can’t even call the team by it’s name, or the city.
what a joke of a person.

Lets all be honest here, NO ONE LOOKED GOOD
including ESPN, D-Wade & Bosch, The Cav’s, The City of Cleveland, New York City, and anyone who allowed this Dog and Pony show to happen.
I think much shame is owed to ESPN, You are there to report the news, not dictate it, shame on ESPN

And the sad thing is
Some people still think ESPN is the only source of sports news.

Gilbert was an enabler to Lebron
So I find him equally as culpable as James.
no one came out of this whole thing with any enhanced reputation...mostly spoiled kids
if Gilbert showed a bit of class and dignity the Cavs organisation could have come out looking decent….too bad I only feel sorry for Cavs fans
Re: Marko's take.
I understand the “Loyalty” thing so to speak.
But, that was OHIO’s OWN!
And, you gotta think of this as if this were the BUCKS, because this is gonna happen to us REAL SOON.
LBJ just showed these young rookies like Brandon that if your team is NOT going to make it EVEN a superstar like James doesn’t have the clout to make team’s accommodate that SMALL market city !
LBJ basically said to OHIO: “you will never be good enough for me!”
I also understand the “KNEE-JERK” reaction by Gilbert.
Because you gotta make the FAN BASE sympathetic in a time of crisis!
WE didn’t want Kareem to go, but, we got something and the Cav’s got NOTHING! Plus, they took on FOREIGN investors (Tsing Tao Brewery China) to give them MORE flexibility and market exposure for a small market city, the Cav’s franchise will be back to where they were…WORTHLESS! Dan Gilbert probably SOLD his soul to USHER, TSING TAO Brewery. He’s definitely taking a LOSS with this! I would be pist too if financially I am taking a hit on my investment! (LeBron was the “Titanic” that transformed a piss smelling Gund Arena to a modernized Q!)
We would be burning JERSEY’s and everything we would have of said player.
Mainly, because YOU would have thought that a player so GREAT would combat the norm and go against the grain and make players wanna COME to your city!
Especially if you stood firm and said that your place is in OHIO!
I vote LBJ because of the WHOLE small market thing.
LeBronda started a ripped and now we gotta make sure Jennings is appeased at EVERY level…Thanks King!
Jennings is his own man with his own mind and values....I wouldnt presume anything about him so dont drag him into this please just let the kid play ball
Re: Jennings
We are Milwaukee.
Pretty Much the SAME boat as CLE
NY said on numerous occasions, that they will try to LURE Jennings!
If Jennings does indeed BLOW UP like EVERYONE thinks he will!
HE is going to leave us after seeing that if Le Bron “The Greatest Player” to play the game can’t LURE free agents to CLE…what make him think that HE can!
I really HOPE that Milwaukee players show the SAME loyalty!
I really do!

From Jenning's Facebook
Never run away from your problems, man up. If it was easy we all would have a ring, Lebron did what he had to do I guess, should have been more low-key about it. He just affected alot of ppl in Cleveland, I don’t think he know how much the ppl in Cleveland loved him, it more then basketball to them I think…. Remember the great ones always stuck it out through the hard times. "Kobe" "MJ"…
Yeah… He TOTALLY seems easily influenced….

Wait until his rookie contract is up and Milwaukee has only seen the second round!
Then, come talk to me. All of that was a saving face because Milwaukee would get paranoid and start asking him those questions!
by Marko Schmidt on Jul 9, 2010 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions
Because of the relevance of our same market structure.
Brandon’s coming of age. and Milwaukee’s paranoia.
Please tell me some retarded journalist on like TV58 wouldn’t ask these questions?
But Dan Gilbert continues to be hilarious regardless
He owns FatHead (Poster company) And he dropped the price of a LeBron Cavs FatHead to $17.41
Benedict Arnold’s birthday.

I wish they had a button for they both deserve each other....Id vote for that
also would you be interested if Wade, Bosch, LBJ are all earning what $14-15 million a hear call you up and say why dont you come and take the league minimum to come and play support for us in our ego trip…….pass unless your already looking at the minimum pay out like a Stack…..or you’ve made you money and in the last couple years and want to a shot at a ring…..or your a d-league borderline guy anyway………..
be interesting if they can get Udonis Haslem a Miami guy all the way to get into that deal?
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
Well it seems LeBron thinks the Heat are so good
Pat Riley could play PG for them or something like that.
they dont really need a pg Wade and LBj handle the ball so much maybe just a guy like Fisher right?
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
standing on the shoulders of giants
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
All your PG does is defend and spot up for threes
Seems like Chalmers can do that, though they probably would prefer another veteran too, hence the talk about Fish and Ridnour (not that Luke is going to be defending anyone all that well).

haha Fisher seems the perfect fit for Miami doesnt he......
still need some height I imagine and toughness to go against the C’s, Orlando & LA……..Haslem will help some but they still look a bit soft Miami……Bosh isnt exactly a banger

This article confirms what we probably all thought,

It kind of makes me sick reading about it. I think events like these in the NBA need to be addressed. …It’s a vague statement but there is something that just feels wrong about how this came about.

He is like a 9 year old that was told he wasn’t getting the candy bar at the grocery store
FEAR THE DEER!!! but not til next year =(

I honestly can't blame him
He just lost his biggest source of income in LeBron and he worked hard in the end to make him stay. It’s actually nice to see some owners show some emotion…

I actually liked Gilbert's remarks....
Let’s be honest, he said what everyone in Cleveland was feeling. And in a weird way he sacrificed his clout on a national level to fast track the healing process in Cleveland. It was the right thing to do, but it took courage…

Don't forget about Jesse Jackson
He wants to get in on “the biggest Jerk” competiton, putting himself into the “Not Any of my Business” side of the bracket.

He apparently forgot to mention to that LeBron is making millions. What an idiot.

Jackson...
is on a whole different level of “jerk.” He’ll show up after a drive-by and use a families tragedy to get media facetime and disappear as soon as the news trucks leave. The guy doesnt have a shred of dignity left…he is a pariah that has been praying on African-Americans for years; the only person he actually helps is himself…
