The Three Rs (Rumors, Reactions, Rants) of General NBA discussion.
A four team trade that went down today between Houston, New Jersey, New Orleans and Indiana. I figured that would make today a good day to start a general NBA fanpost for Bucks fans to discuss news and stories outside of Milwaukee. Trade details on the other side of the jump.
The impedous for this trade seems to be Indiana's quest for a point guard, Houston's quest to dump some salary after a big spending summer, Jersey looking for a vet to take pressure off Favors at power forward, and New Orleans desparately trying to please CP3s demands for a talent infusion.
Indiana acquired Darren Collison and James Posey's bloated contract, which they can afford. Houston picks up a talented and cheap swingman in Courtney Lee. New Jersey picks up a stretch four in Troy Murphy because they apparently miss Yi so much already. New Orleans picks up swingman Trevor Ariza as a wingman for CP3 on the break.
Any reaction to this trade or any other goings on during these dog days of the NBA? Here is your place to react.

And I think everybody benefits in this trade. However, Ariza doesn’t seem to be a stunning prize for Collison and Posey. And Murphy is a pretty bad defender, so I don’t know if he’ll be a good fit for Avery Johnson.
NO also swapped Julian Wright for Marco whatshisname from the Raptors.

Schmidt?
I think I know who won that deal.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.

Ranking as of today
1) Collison, Stephenson, George, Granger could be a nice 1-3 rotation in a few years
2) NO makes a solid gain and upgrade to Peja.
3) Houston saves cap space without losing too much productivity
4) NJ makes very small gains unless it helps with a trade at the deadline
David Aldridge said it was made with Melo in mind
Being that Murphy is expiring.

Aren't Murphy and Lee's contracts
Miles apart in size? Did NJ give up something else?

I've noticed in the NBA
Anything can happen in a trade, Miami trades a 1st rounder plus a player for a 2nd rounder for example.

Indiana wins HUGE
I’m surprised Indy’s deal isn’t getting more attention. They used their financial situation to a big advantage, got a REALLY good young point guard to add to a talented group, and opened up more playing time for Hansbrough!
Wait, that last part might be a disaster.
yes I think Larry Bird deserves some credit assembling a team by de-assembling the team he put together to replace the de-assembled team that he assembled in the first place

I like how Larry alluded to his three year plan...how long has he been GM there?
obviously he scrapped the plan that was based around assembling the whitest basketball team in the NBA
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
And bye bye Isaiah.
Dang it, Stern, why’d you have to let the Knicks off the hook so easily?
Oh well. Revenge will come once he’s named their GM again in a few years…

Rod Thorn hired as President of '6ers
Don’t know how much control he’ll have since they’re keeping Stefanski, but it looks to be a very good hire.

hmm I think he will have the 'foot on throat' type of control over Stefanski.....the beginning of the end
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
If Indy got Collison & Poseys contract [not horrible - 2yrs 13mil] for Murphy, what could we get for Redd?
I know some folks think we should let him expire…..but I wonder what Hammond is thinking.
Murphy
1) NJ has every intention of using Murphy as a player this season while Favors develops
2) Murphy can actually contribute to a possible contender as an expiring contract at the trade deadline
Unfortunately, Indiana looks to be improved this coming season
If George & Stephenson pan out, the Pacers will have some talent & depth on their roster, and could be a .500 team.
I say they finish 3rd in the Central.
thats a lot of if's and but's ;)
they certainly have some interesting pieces regardless now
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
Losing Murphy
will require another IF
Magnum Rolle will have to pan out at PF as well for Indy.
you mean Tyler Hansborough and his 36% fg isnt the answer?
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
I'm not sayin I expect much from them this year, but they do have some good, young talent.
And a lot of SFs – I’d guess they’ll trade one for a PF?
well they are on the right track now
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
T.J. Ford is an apple..
that has fallen far from the tree.. What happened after he left Toronto at the height of his prime?? The Pacers offered him a buyout of $5 mil the morning after this trade.. It makes me sad to see T.J. fall so far after watching him as a rook for the Bucks and doing pretty well. Between the neck injuries, and getting traded twice (and almost 3 times..) he has had it rough in the NBA. Having said that, would there be any value in trading Dooling and something else for him to be a viable backup to BJ3?
"Furry walls, o furry walls.."
I think Dooling has a no trade clause
Could be wrong about that.

You need to be an 8 yr vet w/4 years on the same team to get a no-trade
In other words, pretty much no one has a no-trade clause. But Dooling can’t be traded before 12/15 because he was just signed.

hmm possibly dont know if the 8 yr vet applied when he signed his last contract though
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
maybe Paul Pierce too
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
I believe it is a provision than can only be inserted in new contracts signed by 8-and-4 players
In 2007, Kobe was the only one with it. Dirk Nowitzki got a no-trade clause from the Mavs, dunno about Paul Pierce. Interestingly, if those guys had agreed to extensions, they could not have gotten no-trade clauses because those can only be put in new contracts, not extensions. Hence opting out. I think Amare Stoudamire could have gotten one from the Suns if he had stayed there.
Unsurprisingly, front offices find no-trade clauses distasteful. This quote from 2007 reads straight out of baseball’s 1960 pre-free agency mindset:
“I sure hope it’s not a trend,‘’ Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Jim Stack said. "I’d like to think that most players don’t want to be that involved in something like this. The way they ought to think of it is, you’re signing a contract to play in the NBA. You’re being paid a tremendous amount of money. The trend of that [the no-trade clause] becoming pervasive, it’s not really good for our league.’’
In other words, those players must realize how good they have it and take it upon themselves to avoid hurting the league!
Somehow I doubt Stack talked about front offices needing to avoid stupid signings that hurt the league and cause no-trade clauses to be a problem. But, I digress…
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
Good stuff
And I think Kobe and Dirk are the only guys with no-trade clauses

I'd much rather have Dooling than TJ.
TJ is an older, smaller, crappier version of BJ…. atleast Dooling has good size & D – not to mention a better attitude & contract than TJ.
agreed TJ would be even worse than ridnour on the defensive end and that would make a tiny back court combo....
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
Attitude is a major factor
At this point he probably realizes he’s not a starter, but the fact that he was a locker room liability b/c he lost his starting gig in TO is a major turnoff.

Here's One to Throw Out There
Scottie Pippen does not deserve to be in the HOF. his stats were inflated because of playing with Jordan, he proved he could not be “The Guy” when he left Chicago, if not for the fact that he won all those titles with the Bulls he would not even be considered.
Agree? Disagree?
I'm taking my talents to.......The Golden Arches!

TBH I'm on the fence
I think both he and DJ are beneficiaries of a week class this year and I think both of them were so underated they were overrated if you see what I mean. I guess it’s the power of winning multiple championships. IMO Malone is the only slam-dunk HOFer of the 2010 class.
I'm taking my talents to.......The Golden Arches!
I hated Pippen as a player - but I guess he deserves the HOF - but barely, IMO.
Tell me again… how is Rodman NOT in the HOF??!!
Hall of Fame voters in most sports don't look favorably on bat@#%$ crazy guys
Unless he is a slam dunk.
Maybe he should play first base instead. That is, he should lie out there and we can step on him when we get a hit.
I think Pippen was class just for his defense.....and his numbers across the boards are pretty stellar
combine that with performing pretty well in 6 titles considering the talent drop after Jordan and Pippen was pretty sharp especially for the second bunch of titles after Horace Grant left
"That," says LeBron, "is for everyone that watches me play. They witness something special. You're all a witness."
After reading all the stuff about Pippen
And looking at his stats, I’m convinced he was a better version of Paul Pressey, whose game I loved. Probably would hav liked Pippen if he wasn’t on the Bulls.
I'm taking my talents to.......The Golden Arches!
Probably slightly overrated at this point
Realistically luck has a huge impact on everyone’s legacy, and in that sense Pippen hit the lottery given that he got to be Jordan’s running mate in Chicago. No doubt he was a great player, but I’d be curious how much he’d be remembered if he had ended up with the Clippers or Nets. I’m guessing he would have just been a really nice player who never won anything.
by Frank Madden on Aug 15, 2010 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions
But then again, who knows if Jordan would have gotten all those titles without Pip.

And Rodman should have been inducted to the HOF in his first yr of elegibility, IMO.
Yes… he’s a total wingnut, but for those of you that didn’t see him play, look up his stats…. and those still don’t do his impact on a game justice. Chuck Daly said Rodman was the smartest player he ever coached.

I think there's a good chance that Maggette is a rental for this yr
Since Gadz/Bell were gonna get paid this yr anyways, JH got the best return he could find, IMO.
CMs contract will be much more tradeable w/ only 2yrs left [after this yr]
Of course, there’s a chance he could be included in a blockbuster trade w/ Redd at the deadline….. 20ppg scorers who get to the FT line will always be in demand, even w/ his contract [CM, not Redd]
I'll admit that after the first week of the trade...

Yeah, definitely an “I told you so” moment.
I hate to see a kid with all this potential on the court and issues off the court stopping him. You would think millions of dollars would be enough to straighten somebody out. It’s really time for the NBA to start some professional sports edicate and responsibility training for incoming rooks or colleges to give these athletes some training over their college careers.
The NBA has been doing that training for years.
I remember a couple of years ago, Beasley got in trouble for sneaking pot into the sessions. We see how well that has worked out for him. Perhaps an NBA veteran mentoring program is what some of these young players need. Sort of like Big Brother program for adults. Maybe the NBA can recruit some recently retired guys to staff the mentoring program to keep in touch with younger players, especially those who have been scouted as potential problems.

hof deserving
Pippin totally deserves hof status. Anyone who saw him throughout his career would have to know his impact far exceeded his stats. One of the ten best players of the nineties. I absolutely loved Paul Pressey, but Pippin was significantly better, especially as a scorer and finisher. Ditto for Rodman but even more so. Ditto for Dennis Johnson, although less so. Ditto for Joe Dumars.
As I already posted elsewhere, none are more deserving than Sidney Moncrief, the most overlooked player in nba history this time of year.
Artis Gilmore, Rodman, Moncrief all deserve to be in the HOF.
I’m sure there’s more….
Check out the "Are the Bulls as good as we think" story on hoopsworld.com
Good read and some nice thoughts on the Bucks
Wow.... I just taught myself how to copy and paste!! [forgive me, i joined the computer generation later than most]
The Milwaukee Bucks finished last season with the runner up for both Rookie of the Year in Brandon Jennings and the Coach of the Year in Scott Skiles. Andrew Bogut, despite missing the end of the season with an injury, has quietly transformed into one of the top three centers in the East, and enough improvements were made the rest of the roster in the offseason to make them a truly formidable opponent this season.
While the Bulls have more star power than Milwaukee with Boozer and Rose, they might not be as cohesive or well-coached as The Deer. If Chicago is better than Milwaukee right now, it’s not a painfully obvious truth.

What I was meaning to say
In your comments, if you want a pink box around your quotes, you must put whatever you want in the pink box between those blockquote tags. So you will type

If you don’t want to muck around with typing out those tags, then the advice about highlighting your quote and clicking the quotation marks in between the subject line and the comment box is the easiest way to go.

Lol. Thanks - I'll get it eventually : )
You’d think being a gen-X, I’d be a bit more computer savvy.
Nice bit about the Bucks, huh?
Not only did Bird draft this thug, he gave him guaranteed money! Isn't that rare for a 2nd rounder?
And just when I thought Bird was making some good moves w/ the Collison trade
A criminal complaint provided Monday by the Brooklyn district attorney’s office said that as Williams lay at the bottom of the stairs, Stephenson picked up her head and slammed it on the bottom step.
What a D-bag
So ESPN released another "sources"/Melo report
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5468878
Okay, first of all, I don’t claim to know whether this is true or not. But I’m getting pretty tired of ESPN. Honestly, the vibe I’m getting from ESPN is that they actually want all these stars to leave their team and go to a bigger market. Seriously, for every information about Melo leaving based on what happened at a wedding party, (which really doesn’t mean that much in the first place) there’s a ton of “signs” pointing to said star staying. Why wasn’t ESPN all over that Melo said he was “open” to an extension? Or LeBron when he said the Cavs “had the edge”? Maybe none of this means anything, but it seems ESPN will report what it wants to report and only that.
And can they please tell us who these “sources” are that claim to know everything that these players are thinking? Thanks.
Okay that’s all :P

Time to complete my all crazy team:
PG: Delonte West
SG: J.R Smith
SF: Ron Artest
PF: Kenyon Martin

I guess all that trade talk was getting to him so he tried to render himself untradable.
