Looking at the numbers for the Bucks PF/C position so far this season (Per HoopData)
Rebound rates: ORR DRR TRR
Ilyasova 7.8 19.7 13.6
Leuer 7.0 16.3 11.5
Sanders 7.0 19.4 13.0
Gooden 13.6 19.4 16.4
Brockman* 37.1 29.8 33.6
*= Tiny sample size, Brockman has only played 3.7 MPG in three games.
I don’t know the league averages for PF/C position for rebound rates, but all but Brockman’s seem low to me. What seemed like a team strength in the last few years under Skiles has quickly devolved into a weakness this season. Has the emphasis on pushing the ball in transition affected the Bucks defensive rebounding? This seems like a job for Statman Steve. Research away!
All of those are actually a bit above average except Leuer, who’s a bit below average. HoopData PF averages: ORR-8.1, DRR-17.4, TRR-12.7. The averages go up a bit if you filter for players with 10+ MPG.
Theoretically, increasing emphasis on transition offense can hurt defensive rebounding since your wings are less likely to stick around and track down loose balls. With Bogut at center, it’s a decent trade-off since he’s a good defensive rebounder and a very good passer. When guys like Leuer or Sanders are playing center, that rebounding drop-off can kill you.
I’d be surprised if the Bucks’ rebounding stayed this bad. Think it’s a sample-size issue more than anything, and missing Bogut for two games was brutal on the boards. Plus, if taking a hit on the boards means a better transition offense, that’s probably a shift worth making, to at least some degree.
Tonight's game
…is the first full implementation of my new Minimum Standards policy,. It will be DVRed. Later, before any viewing, I will check in here to see IF it’s worth watching. And if so, what parts are worth watching.
I am reluctant to have to practice Tough Love toward my favorite team. If anyone notices my behavior or my words on it, some will call it (openly or in the privacy of their thoughts) being a weak Fair Weather Fan. (Even though I think that’s a unsupportable accusation against anyone who spends the Winter in Wisconsin.) None of that shall deter me.
I will not enable or co-enable (or whatever the current jargon is) the Milwaukee Bucks practice of zombie ball. Our team not having the head nor heart to give a full effort cannot be condoned. When the franchise checks the karmic grid after tonight’s game, they (if the game goes as I expect) will be surprised to see a hole in Appleton WI — precisely where they are accustomed to seeing a bright star of loyal support. Let it be a lesson to them…
Robert Burton said it all in the 16th century, after giving the populace what they wanted with the more popular soundbite. Later in his library he cursed under his breath, threw his glass of whiskey against the fireplace bricks, and declaimed: “WTF! What can’t be endured must be cured!!”
Burton, although he held prominence as an Oxford scholar and religious official, must have been a Milwaukee Bucks fan at heart. He is famous for penning the classic The Anatomy of Melancholy. That work does not mention the Bucks by name (it would have destroyed his good reputation) but the inspiration is obvious.
