On the Suns: Bright Side of the Sun / Valley of the Suns

Michael Redd will step on the Bradley Center court for the first time as a visiting player on Tuesday night, as the Phoenix Suns look to win their third straight while dealing the Bucks their third straight loss.

Star-divide

Redd returns. Michael Redd's departure from Milwaukee was decidedly uneventful, an oddly quiet way for one of the franchise's most polarizing (and best) players to walk off into the sunset. I spoke about Redd's complicated Bucks career at Voice on the Floor over a year ago, but my hope is that he's warmly welcomed back to the city where he spent his first decade as a pro.

Redd has mostly struggled since signing with the Suns in December, shooting just 34.8% in 11.2 mpg, though he showed some long-lost signs of life on Saturday with 17 points on 12 shots against the Bobcats. He started that game in place of Jared Dudley, but came off the bench last night in the Suns' 99-90 win over Atlanta.

Home and away. The Bucks lost their 24th straight game in Phoenix a month ago, dropping a rather non-competitive 109-93 decision. Steve Nash dropped 17 assists as Phoenix rolled to its 36th win in 41 tries over the Bucks, who were finishing up an 0-5 Western road swing and playing their fourth consecutive game without Andrew Bogut. The Bucks hopes of winning might start with their ability to defend the P&R, which was a major issue in Phoenix and has been a thorn in the Bucks' side for much of the season. Though he might not be Amare Stoudemire, Marcin Gortat has proven a capable running mate for Nash this season with career-highs of 14.9 ppg (56% shooting) and 10.2 rpg, and he (or perhaps more accurately, Nash) toyed with the Bucks to the tune of 18 points on 9/10 shooting last month.

Nash equilibrium. Nash turns 38 years young today and is expected to play again tonight despite some pain in his right shoulder. It didn't seem to bother him in last night's win in Atlanta, as the two two-time MVP scored 24 on just 12 shots and handed out 11 assists for good measure.

Fast Learners. Quick quiz: which three players lead the Bucks in both PER and win shares/48 minutes? Brandon Jennings would seem to be an obvious choice, and he does indeed lead the team in both PER (20.4) and is second in ws/48 (.148). But few would have predicted over the summer that the other two players would be none other than rookies Tobias Harris (18.4 / .144) and Jon Leuer (18.6 / .180).

Harris was one of the few the only bright spot in Saturday night's 113-90 bludgeoning at the hands of the Bulls, tallying career-highs in points (19), minutes (30), and shots made and attempted (8/14).

Inaction Jackson. So when will we see Stephen Jackson on the court again? Who knows. Jackson did get on the court against Miami last week after Carlos Delfino's early foul trouble, but he's otherwise been notably absent from Scott Skiles' rotation for the better part of two weeks. The Jackson saga has surprisingly had little apparent(*) impact on the team's performance or chemistry, though it's not clear how long the Bucks can afford to keep Jackson rotting on the bench.

The good news is that everybody's saying the right things so far, though one of the issues I find most interesting is Jackson's friendship with fellow Oak Hill alum Brandon Jennings. Jackson has always had a rep for being well liked by teammates, but that's especially the case with Jennings, who has compared the elder Jackson as an older brother of sorts. I don't think it's in anyone's interest to keep Jackson around simply for that reason, but it's a factor worth watching out for. For instance: Charles Gardner writes that Jennings had hoped to see Jackson play some part in the Bulls game:

"Just his presence probably could have changed the game, you just never know. Especially a guy like that who has been sitting down for so long. When they're sitting down for so long and they come in, they've always got that spark that can help us.

"I was a little disappointed, just the fact he didn't get a chance to play and I feel he could have done something for us."

My most upbeat comment about tonight's game...

is to say nothing.

A bad effort would seem to fit the situation. A good effort would keep my head spinning. I’m growing a bit tired of vertigo behavior in our deer population. Tonight, not me, will speak for itself.

Sounds like Jackson has chronic wasting disease.

Hopefully Jennings can bag a 30-pointer.
Maybe Gooden can get out of his rut.

Any more puns we can throw at this one?

best wishes for tonight

I really hope the Bucks can figure out how to win tonight: that’s my priority.
But I also want to wish:
Happy Birthday to Steve Nash — looking awesome for 38!
And welcome back to Michael Redd…

I will be on a plane during most of the game. I hope when I get off to go online and learn that the Bucks won. If we are going to return to the winning ways we lost last weekend, it must begin with this quite winnable game at the BC!

and… I really don’t see why Skiles won’t play Jackson now and then, on Saturday, there was literally nothing to lose

I will probably miss most, if not all the entire game tonight

because of a birthday dinner, so I hope we can beat the Phoenix Suns, or at the very least put on a decent effort in comparison to our last two games.

On Wisconsin!

I know which birthday dinner it is...

Herb Kohl’s. I believe he’s 77 TODAY. What gift did you get him?

If I was retired, I’d Google to confirm that today is the day. Since I’m a working stiff I won’t.

Yah… I can swing with winds and losses but I’d like to see reasonably consistent “decent efforts.” What I can’t swing with is the swing – from manic high to manic low, etc.

Could be related to the Bucks having

an horrendous schedule (yet playing .500 ball, btw).
I have no idea what the rest of the way looks like, but at worst it’s probably a wash with what we’ve had so far.
Good news.

Another Lesson

Here’s to hoping BJ3 isn’t schooled again by Nash. It would be nice to see some more of Nash’s game in Jennings though, but one could only hope. Looking forward to an up-tempo win, good shooting, and hopefully at least one Gooden pass to himself off of the backboard.
Either way, i will have my Michael Redd bobblehead out, wishing him the best of luck.

is it wrong of me that I'm more concerned with the Jackson story than this game?

Hopefully Skiles lets Jackson come out of time-out. Jackson’s saying he’s ready to play for Milwaukee. Jennings is saying he’s disappointed Jackson isn’t playing. FeartheDeer is flat out pissed Jackson isn’t playing. This story needs to play out.

Maybe all the trade rumors are BS...

and it’s just discipline for that one outing where he took 1 shot in 20min or whatever.
Maybe it’s both.
The Bucks have proven that they can win without him; I’m not bothered by him sitting.

...BRANDONJENNINGSSUX!!!

by TwoShoesMcGooze on Feb 7, 2012 11:37 AM CST up reply actions

The longer Jackson isn't traded...

The more it would seem to confirm the lack of a trade market for his services. Not surprising, but it’s a weird situation that threatens to throw off the whole team. We should probably be rooting for Dwight to get traded to the Nets or some other place that might want to appease him by also acquiring Jax, right?

Also, if they can’t trade Jax, would they simply amnesty him next summer? I’m not a fan of using the amnesty on a guy with an expiring deal, but the cycle of bringing in highly paid guys who can’t fit in (debatable on blame, but that’s reality) has to end.

Enough with Top Down coaching!!!

I’ve decided that’s my current cause célèbre.

Basketball, I hereby decree, belongs to the players. NOT the coaches. Coaches should facilitate – not dictate. When they act like puppet masters, the game is abused. When the personalities of the players get repressed by and sacrificed to The System, then the game becomes a military exercise. I have no trouble with military exercises in military situations (served 2 years), but the spirit of sport is IMO not military.

Free the Bucks Now!! Free the Badgers Now!! Fair Play for Players!! Out from Under the Coach’s Thumb!!

I’ve sent a registered & certified email to the SPCA. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Athletes.

Whose gonna make the picket signs?

by unklchuk on Feb 7, 2012 12:14 PM CST reply actions

But I disagree,

Bo Ryan is universally regarded as an excellent coach, and the “under the thumb” coaching style is totally justified and needed in the college game. The NBA is a bit of a different story, but I generally believe that play dictation and discipline are good things. Although, my gym-class/YMCA b-ball strategy of just passing until someone has a layup would probably translate beautifully into the NBA.

...BRANDONJENNINGSSUX!!!

by TwoShoesMcGooze on Feb 7, 2012 12:42 PM CST up reply actions

"excellent coach"

That was gospel with me for years. But I’m crossing over. IMO all those experts who articulate how great Ryan is fall asleep trying to broadcast Badger games. Sounds like heresy, but I no longer believe that winning justifies squashing the life out of the game.

When the Badgers are making shots, they don’t wait until the last seconds of every shot clock to force up mediocre shots. And it looks quite a bit like basketball. But making shots is only a sometime-thing with Badger athletes and the off games are worse than gruesome.

I graduated from Madison. Now I want Badger bball to graduate to something that’s alive.

FREE STEVE NAAAASH

But what you’re describing is simply effective leadership. Allow your people to do what they do best, only seek to guide them. Set them up and get the hell out of the way.

Of course, if you’re saddled with people who can’t (or won’t) do what they want to do, that’s when the leader needs to take a more active hand. So either the Bucks have a dearth of talent, or Skiles wrongfully believes they do.

I personally think the problem is threefold: the Bucks have less talent than Skiles believes, Skiles has less talent than the Bucks believe, but Skiles is the most experienced personality among the accepted leaders*.

*Stephen Jackson could have been accepted…if he wasn’t deemed an outcast by Scott Skiles.

by Mitchell Maurer on Feb 7, 2012 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

I agree to a point chuk. With a small market team like Milwaukee, you gotta do something to get the fans excited for another hopefully .500 season. Playing slow, grind it out defensive basketball isn’t doing it for a lot of folks. Bradley center is half full unless Lebron, Kobe, or others of their ilk are in town. It was disgusting listening to the Bulls fans invade this past weekend and cheer their team on. Let BJ3 get his flow going, and others play off of him, that’s when he is at his best and the bucks are most exciting.
but….gotta leave Bo out of this. He does more with less talent than any coach in the big 10 IMO. I went to platteville during his D3 championship run, and he was always colorful and engaging to everyone. His players absolutely loved him, and still do.

by Redd's Ghost on Feb 7, 2012 1:03 PM CST up reply actions

" I went to platteville during his D3 championship run, and he was always colorful and engaging to everyone. His players absolutely loved him, and still do."

Your POV is fine with me. I realize the esteem Bo is held in, and seek here to just chisel one crack in his marble statue ;) and see where it leads.

I think Bo Ryan is an absolutely fantastic small college coach. If I lived near Platteville back then I would have loved having season tickets. But Wisconsin is knocking on the door to being a major national force – and I don’t think Bo’s approach and seeming-inability to recruit major talent are up to the challenge.

I don’t want my school’s legacy to be: “They’re deadly boring, but they win – until they come up against an athletic team with moxie, and then they fall completely apart.”

by unklchuk on Feb 7, 2012 1:16 PM CST up reply actions

Except, historically, they play well against high-flyers...

With the likes of Jon Leuer, Mike Wilkinson, Marcus Landry, Alando Tucker, etc. representing their “elite” players. It’s the Bucknells of the world that sneak up and beat them.

by mpbMKE on Feb 7, 2012 2:45 PM CST up reply actions

Well, I don't agree with either point...so there! Makes it all even...

The scars of my viewing history of Badgers against talented teams suggest that IF the talented team isn’t real smart or is looking past the Badgers, UW surely can walk away with a solid victory. But if the coach for a talented team gets through to his players that the Badgers are more dangerous than they look (‘cuz they don’t look very dangerous), and gets his team to use their athleticism to intimidate our Wisconsin warriors, then we look like we don’t belong on the same court. Which, if athleticism is being measured, we don’t.

Dunkathons bore the hell out of me. Athleticism without teamwork and hoops IQ is just a fast-paced exercise class. Means little. And I can watch swarming, active defense for hours.

But plodding draft-horse offense moving in slow-motion with players who are intimidated from expressing their hoops personalities and are simply implementing a juice-less system is my idea of torture worse (I’m foolishly asserting) than water-boarding.

So, you won’t find me in the main of any stream of UW fans – but like Popeye I yams what I yams – and my opinions is what they is (until they change).

by unklchuk on Feb 7, 2012 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

Extremes notwithstanding ...

I kinda like a balance between the two. It has become increasingly more difficult to watch the Badgers.

really?

lucky this is a game thread. if it was a small group session you’d be encouraged to expound.

if I try to feel your pain (thanks Bill Clinton) I’d fumble around saying that the on-the-field reality of most cheerleading squads is kinda phony like beauty pageants. And the pure idea of them belongs in a flawed, coarse, mis-applied-passions world.

but IMO there are transcendent moments somewhere in between where a cheerleader is full of the simple joy of movement and performing, feeling the surging energy of the crowd. And I guess I’m full of some joy too…

guess I try to avoid concentrating overly on the patterns that our society commonly uses. don’t think it takes much wisdom to find them intentionally pegged at a low common denominator. not worth much cherishing. but there are exquisite moments to be found in them. (and perhaps that’s what the originators had in mind. maybe that’s the way it has to work.)

Leaving now for MacDonald’s (not too high a denominator) and church (results vary).

With Coach Zorro on our side, we will slice opponents to ribbons. Tim Tebow gives me hope and I already have faith and charity in my heart! I see a propitious future rife with Lombardis for our Broncos!

Jennings might be sick or injured

He’s moving so slowly, looks like he just doesn’t have the energy to keep up with Nash and push the ball offensively.

In his defense...

the ball was passed to him with about 1.5 seconds left. The ball should not have been passed there.

This is karma for the success of the other Wisconsin sports teams.

Seriously though, guys. They’re 10-14. Context.

I can only hope Jennings was sick or something.

Otherwise Bucks have bigger problems…his lack of initiative on offense was baffling.

Funny thing is the Bucks matched the Suns on offense across the board.

And they all have reasons behind them.

Offense was not it tonight.

After a while, Steve, reasons don't matter.

If one wants to disect numbers to siphen some sort of positive out of this, good luck. In the end, it’s wins and losses. Sorry, i am just pissed.

Oh believe me, I am too.

Breaking it down keeps me sane. I know you are more frustrated with the Bucks than you are with me. They deserve it tonight for sure.

Players who make plays ...players who make plays ...

When the hell are the Bucks ever gonna get players who makes plays ….players who make plays …..They are the ambassadors of mediocrity……

I got to watch this game at my buddies house who is a suns fan

this one hurt, just dont know what is going on anymore. I still can not describe this season at all. I feel like its time to tank but that won’t happen since they are still in the playoffs.

by Rare Monkey on Feb 7, 2012 9:34 PM CST reply actions

Ilyasova

I love his rebounding and effort, but I can’t take it anymore. He doesn’t dunk shots he should, which end up mostly in blocked and altered lay up attempts. He plays hot potato with the basketball in the clutch. He’s not ready for half the passes that come his way. His trade value has to be pretty high right now with this rebounding stretch, trade this guy b4 his value plummets again.

by FearTheDeer on Feb 7, 2012 9:41 PM CST reply actions

i just cannot actively root for losses

but i agree, tanking would probably be the most beneficial turn of events.

by w t f on Feb 7, 2012 9:41 PM CST reply actions

Yup

deep down I want them to win every night even when I start to think and talk tank. If the team flat out came out and signaled that they were going to tank, I could probably support it, but as long as this team wants to win-now, I’ll want them to win-now.

by FearTheDeer on Feb 7, 2012 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

However

the short season might make it more tolerable

by FearTheDeer on Feb 7, 2012 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

I'm with you guys.

Just can’t watch games rooting for losses…if I did I wouldn’t watch at all. If they played the youngsters and lost because of it, then I can accept it, but…

by Frank Madden on Feb 7, 2012 9:50 PM CST up reply actions

that is a hard road to go down either way

look at the bobcats – routine demolission would lose many fans

by AussieTom on Feb 7, 2012 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

yea i can't root for losses either

so its really hard since I know we should be but I still want the “w”.

by Rare Monkey on Feb 7, 2012 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

If you are not down with rooting for Bucks losses...

How about rooting for Jeremy Lin to take the Knicks to the playoffs to get pasted by the Bulls in the first round instead of Milwaukee. Let’s be honest, the league wants the Knicks in the playoffs, so we might as well root for it too.

Jackson

Howie Magner

My question to #Bucks Stephen Jackson: Do you still want to be in Milwaukee? S-Jax: “I can’t answer that. If I answer that, I’ll get fined”

Nothing we didn’t already know, but it’s unfortunate, I really feel like this team is about to collapse.
