A quick by-the-numbers look at Gustavo Ayon and Ish Smith

USA TODAY Sports

The acquisition of JJ Redick takes the headlines, but he wasn't the only player Milwaukee grabbed on deadline day. A quick look at the other two new Bucks.

The Milwaukee Bucks pulled off arguably the biggest trade of deadline day, nabbing sought-after shooting guard JJ Redick from the Orlando Magic in exchange for Beno Udrih, Tobias Harris, and Doron Lamb. Redick was the driving force in the deal and is the best player changing teams, but he's not the only guy Milwaukee picked up this afternoon. Here's a primer on the other two new members of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Gustavo Ayon

Center - 6'10" - 27 years old - 2nd year in NBA - Career Stats
Contract Details: $1.5 million in 2013-2014, team option for $1.875 million in 2014-2015. Both years are fully non-guaranteed if Ayon is waived by the preceding July 25th.

Key Numbers:

  • 53.6% - Ayon is hitting 53.6% of his field goals this season. Last year with the Hornets, Ayon hit the exact same percentage.
  • 21.1 - The biggest knock on Ayon's game right now is his high turnover rate, coughing the ball up on over a fifth of his possessions. His role in Milwaukee will be minuscule, but he is prone to moving screens.
  • 0.8 - Ayon's blocks per 36 minutes. Ayon's bulk makes him a decent post defender (he allows just over 37% shooting on post-ups, according to MySynergySports.com), but he's not really a weakside shot-blocker or a great help defender.

Ishmael "Ish" Smith

Point Guard - 6'0" - 24 years old - 3rd year in NBA - Career Stats
Contract Details: Appx. $1 million in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. Final year is fully non-guaranteed if waived by July 15th, 2014.

Key Numbers:

  • 36.2% - Smith is NOT a shooter, hitting a little over a third of his career shot attempts.
  • 6.0 - Smith is however, a solid distributor for a backup PG, with 6.0 assists per 36 minutes for his career. His 25.2 career AST% is only about 2 points below Brandon Jennings' (27.6). It is a significant step down from Beno Udrih, however (31.5 AST% with Milwaukee).
  • 11.2 - Smith's defensive rebound rate, well above average for a point guard. Smith isn't going to play enough to make a real impact, but he can provide some positive impact on the court as long as he's not shooting.
