Ersan Ilyasova's Positive Impact: A Video and Picture Breakdown

After two very solid seasons, Ersan Ilyasova has fallen off a bit this year. Nearly everything—from scoring, to shooting percentages, to rebounding—has dropped from last year. Last night, however, he was on point, dropping 31 points on 13-14 shooting. More like Ersan Trilyasova, am I right? (I’m so right.)

It was easily the best night of the year from the big Turk, and it helped lead the Bucks to victory—in more ways than one. Ersan’s 31 points were huge, obviously, but he also opened the game up for his teammates by getting off to a hot start. Of course, playing the Jazz (owners of the worst defensive efficiency in the league) certainly helped, but Ersan still had to knock down the shots, even if they were wide open on more than one occasion.

Just a minute into the game, Ersan got it started by drilling a three after coming off a couple screens. He followed it up with some easy buckets, which served to increase his confidence, and then, near the end of the first quarter, drained another three. He finished the 1st quarter with 10 points, well on his way to a season high.

The hot start lead, as we know, to Ersan’s season high 31 points, but it also freed up the rest of the team and got them easy baskets as well. As early as the 1st quarter, we saw Ersan’s presence lead to an open three for Nate Wolters, which he promptly knocked down from the corner.

Notice how Gordon Hayward (responsible for Wolters in the corner) is forced to delay his closeout because he was worried about Ersan rolling into the paint. This allows an easy catch and shoot opportunity for Wolters, which he takes advantage of.

Again in the 3rd quarter, we saw the Jazz’s focus on Ersan lead to an easy bucket for the Bucks. With Ersan in the corner, Enes Kanter (the Jazz’s biggest defender on the court at the time) is drawn out of the paint because he respects Ersan’s jumper. This opens up the middle of the court and leads to a layup for Zaza Pachulia.

These were just two examples of how Ersan having a big night helps the Bucks in multiple ways. His scoring is huge, of course, but he also opens up the game for the rest of the team when he’s playing well.
