2014 NBA Draft: Brew Hoop Community Draft Board - Pick #7

Andy Lyons

Brew Hoop looked back to the frontcourt, and Kentucky's freshman phenom took the vote by a tiny margin.

Unsubstantiated rumors of voter fraud have been left behind, and Julius Randle, PF, Kentucky has captured the #6 spot on Brew Hoop's 2014 Draft Board. Randle was the third head of the 2013-2014 Hype Hyrda, along with Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker, and while he may not have garnered the headlines of the other two, he produced monster stat lines with regularity as a member of the perennially-talented Wildcats. Randle racked up 24 double-doubles as a freshman, averaging 15 points and 10.4 rebounds per game overall and helping lead his young team to the 2014 National Championship Game. Randle was a true low-post banger for Kentucky, doing the bulk of his damage in the paint and at the rim. And even though everybody knew it, nobody could stop it. Randle shot an incredible 70% at the rim despite being assisted on only 35% of his baskets at that range, according to Hoop-Math.com. He's also a fantastic rebounder and a very solid foul-shooter, allowing him to take full advantage of his foul-drawing ability.

But for all his NBA-readiness, Randle has some limitations on both ends of the court. His effectiveness masked a somewhat limited offensive game, as Randle was heavily reliant on his left hand and had a tendency to make the same move over and over again, a habit he won't be able to get away with in the NBA. He also struggled to shoot from outside the paint, casting into doubt the floor-stretching ability scouts anticipated seeing from him coming out of high school. And defensively, Randle isn't much of a shot-blocker or rim protector, though his lateral foot speed is good for his size.
