Bucks select LSU forward Johnny O'Bryant with 36th overall pick

Milwaukee continues to stock their frontcourt. Will the newest addition stick?

With the 36th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, the Milwaukee Bucks selected Johnny O'Bryant, a 21 year old forward out of LSU. O'Bryant averaged 15.4 points and 7.7 rebounds in 30 minutes per game for the Tigers as a junior.

O'Bryant was a McDonald's All-American and a consensus top-40 recruit entering college, but struggled with his weight early in his career (he was around 280 pounds in his first season at LSU). A determined effort to get into shape paid major dividends, as his performance improved dramatically after dropping 20 pounds as a sophomore. O'Bryant was named to the All-SEC First Team in his second season while averaging 13.6 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.

According to his profile on DraftExpress, O'Bryant is a talented interior scorer who can use both hands in a back-to-the-basket style. He also has a developing face-up game, sinking 47% of his jump shots as a junior, per Synergy Sports Technology. He flashed some passing ability out of the post but is also extremely turnover prone, with the highest adjusted turnover rate among DX's top-100 prospects.

O'Bryant's style of play might remind you of somebody...

Regardless of the skills O'Bryant may bring, he faces an uphill battle to earn minutes on a Bucks team that is simply loaded with forwards now. After drafting Jabari Parker with the second overall pick, Milwaukee has little incentive to carry a number of developmental power forwards. The futures of Ersan Ilyasova and John Henson are in question at this point, to say nothing of Jeff Adrien and Ekpe Udoh.
