May 16th, The first day Marc Lasry and Wes Edens officially took over, a franchise that would have arguably its most important draft in 20 years in a little over a month, and needed a lot of help. What are the new owners to do? Rush a coaching and GM hire in the month before the draft and hope they some how make the right selection with a month of workouts. or leave the pieces in place, let Jon Hammond and Larry Drew, who had been preparing for this draft for a few months, make the pick. The choice was an easy one in, they let the existing coaching staff make the choice. While it was assumed after the draft hype died down, then they would get down to business with the staff.
Fast forward to Thursday, draft night. The Bucks make the right pick, and Lasry and Edens made the right move, they let Hammond run the draft and they came out with not only a great basketball player but arguably the perfect start to there ownership. Friday the Bucks introduce Jabari to the city in a whirlwind day of pure excitement and jubilation. Everyone is talking Bucks and the world is at peace.
But not everything, there is still lots of work to be done, as owners, Marc and Wes have committed to the rebuild, riding on the youth of Giannis and Jabari, but the question is should they keep Larry Drew? A coach who chose to give more minutes to Ramon Sessions and Gary Neal rather than Giannis Adetekumbo and Nate Wolters, while his team won 15 games and had the worst record in the league.
So when, when was the appropriate time to remove Larry Drew from the coaching position and start looking for a new coach. The Friday and subsequent weekend coming off of a huge boost in morale for the Bucks across the entire state? No probably the weeks following.
So they start looking for replacements, a friend who so happens to be a HOF point guard and, arguably, a pretty good coach. They contact the Nets and ask if they can have permission to interview Kidd, are granted permission and do so. And than it blows up, in a little under 2 hours, and thanks to twitter. Everyone is speculating, worrying and blaming. How rude of the new owners to do this without removing Larry Drew first. Why would they keep Larry through the draft if they were only going to fire him? Well to be honest, they had no choice. While it was a bad situation, it was the only option that made sense.
Ultimately I agree, the whole debacle was mishandled. Interviewing potential candidates while your current coach smiles and waves to the public is not the best course of action, but can you blame them. They were in a tough spot with the timing of there approval as owners and the draft. They had to work with what they got and now they begin there search for the head coach that will turn all these rough 19 year olds into championship ring wearing twenty somethings.
