24 threes fuel Milwaukee to victory

In a game without Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks knocked off the Phoenix Suns in a St. Patrick’s Day matinee, 140-129. If you missed our Rapid Recap from yesterday’s game, you can find it here.

Game Summary

Despite Giannis being a late scratch, there was no absence of offense to begin this one. Both teams were scoring buckets at a high rate, with defense seemingly non-existent. Milwaukee connected on seven threes in the opening stanza, sending them into a 39-36 lead after the opening quarter.

Bobby Portis caught fire in the second quarter, erupting for 25 total points in the first half. With Antetokounmpo sidelined, BP was the catalyst for offense for Milwaukee, knocking down five threes. All in all, Milwaukee shot a red-hot 18-of-27 from 3-point land and boasted an 82-60 halftime lead.

The three ball cooled off a bit for the Bucks in the third. Meanwhile, the Suns started to heat up from deep, particularly Grayson Allen. Phoenix rattled off an 11-0 run once Khris Middleton exited for a break. Despite that slide, the Bucks still grasped a 109-94 lead following a 33-foot jumper from Damian Lillard that ended the third.

Phoenix made a bit of a run in the fourth, slicing things to just single-digits at one point. However, their defense ultimately did them in. Milwaukee capitalized and continued to hit timely threes, re-gaining that same separation they saw for the majority of the game. At the final buzzer, the score read 140-129 in favor of Milwaukee.

Damian Lillard and Bobby Portis each tallied 31 points as the game-high. For Phoenix, Bradley Beal’s 28 points was the team-high.

What Did We Learn?

The Bucks continue to win without all of their resources. Initially, Doc Rivers said that Giannis Antetokounmpo would be able to go. However, about 20 minutes later, it was announced that he’d be sidelined due to hamstring soreness. Regardless, the Bucks were able to weather the storm and get the job done. That’s the pedigree of a championship-level team. Milwaukee has exhibited being able to go through adversity so many times this season with this being another example.

Three Observations

Damian Lillard had a career day.

Lillard boasted stat lines in many areas. First, he stepped up with 31 points, which led the Bucks in scoring alongside Bobby Portis. However, he also accompanied that with 16 assists on the afternoon, matching a career-high in that department. That stat line made him the first Bucks player in history to finish with 30 or more points and 15 or more assists in the same game. Not too shabby. All day long, he was driving to the hoop and getting contact. He’d finish his day with seven free throw attempts. While that number didn’t seem too high, you could tell it helped him develop a scoring groove.

Bobby Portis stepped up big-time.

You can say this about pretty much any Bucks player on the day, but man, Bobby was huge. When Milwaukee really created major separation, Portis was the key reason why. In the first half, he exploded for 25 total points, including a picture-perfect 5-for-5 from the perimeter. BP concluded his day with 31 points, matching Lillard for the game-high. That tied his season-high in points and is tied for the third-highest scoring game of his career. Additionally, when Bobby scores, the crowd gets absolutely hyped. We knew that was the case already, but this was just another big example. He had a lot to say postgame:

“I be in my own zone. Try to block out all the naysayers. They’ve been talking crazy about me all year long. You know, trade him, all types of stuff. So, I get in my own zone now when I go back on the court. Just like that, man. Get back to who I used to be. Go out there and play with confidence. Shoot the ball, get some made. Come back the next day, be who I am. A whole lot of chitter-chatter about who I am, just trying to shut the naysayers up, make them believe. That’s all it is, for real. I’ve got confidence in my coaches. They’ve got confidence in me. They pour confidence into me. My teammates pour confidence into me and make it easier for me to go out there and just hoop. That’s all I’ve been trying to do the second-half of the season is just up my game each and every day, stack games whether I play good or play bad. Look at the film, come back the next day and go right back at it with the same thing. Just trying to stay aggressive and be what I do. Come off the bench, play with energy and effort and shoot the ball with confidence, man. Basketball is always just about confidence.”

The Bucks needed to get crafty without Giannis and they succeeded.

Postgame, Doc Rivers told us about how they emphasized spacing once it was determined Giannis would be out. That’s exactly what they did. Phoenix’s defense was absolutely porous. Damian Lillard attributed taking advantage of their rotations and making them uncomfortable, which was quite evident by the 24 threes that Milwaukee buried. Given how quick of a turnaround Giannis took in being ruled out, kudos to Doc Rivers and the coaching staff for ensuring the team was ready without their superstar.

Bonus Bucks Bits

Khris Middleton was integral in his first game back from his ankle injury. In 25 minutes played, he knocked down 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including a pair of threes. I don’t think you could ask for much more in his return back to the starting five. And on how he felt? “Good,” he said with a smile.

Those 24 threes were a season-high for the Bucks, with 18 of them coming in the first half. Their 18 threes in the first half are tied for the most made threes in a half in NBA history. Milwaukee shot 58.5% from three (24-of-41), marking their second-highest 3-point percentage of the season.

The Bucks are now 17-0 this season when Damian Lillard scores 30+ points and 11-0 when he tallies double-digit assists.

In addition to Khris, Malik Beasley made a return to the starting five. He made his presence known in a big way, connecting on five threes. I asked Doc about him and he just praised his shooting, saying how he doesn’t care if he goes games where he misses.

Speaking of threes, former Buck Grayson Allen found his shooting stroke. He concluded his afternoon with 25 points on 6-of-11 from downtown.

Kevin Durant played 41 minutes and tallied just 11 points. That’s a stat line that you don’t typically see.

Milwaukee Bucks links for your perusal on March 18th, 2024

With just 14 games left in the 2023-2024 NBA regular season, does it get much more consequential for the Milwaukee Bucks than this Wednesday’s showdown against the Boston Celtics?

Well, this game against the Celtics and the one they have scheduled in early April.

What is at stake has nothing at all to do with seeding — Boston will be the East’s first overall seed this playoffs; at most, the result would impact Milwaukee’s race with Cleveland for number two. Instead, it is more about setting a tone. Preferably, a tone different from the one that seems to see the Bucks starting every game against Boston behind the spiritual/morale eight ball.

Wednesday represents, largely, a chance to validate the Doc Rivers Experiment (thus far). At risk of ignoring the prior two results completely, the Bucks bring a new series of offensive emphases (Dame-Giannis two man game, Khris Middleton’s return as the connector, Bobby Portis seems to have hit a rich vein of shooting, Pat Connaughton isn’t a dead man walking) and a statistically improved defense that isn’t as prone to allowing opponents to operate on the perimeter with no friction whatsoever. The rotation has tightened while lessening the asks made of non-Big Three players, and both teams appear relatively healthy heading in.

It is not a matter, then, of win and we’re the East’s champions to-be. But it is as close to an ultimate test this team will get until the games really begin to count in late April. Let’s hope it is, at worst, a fun outing, and see just how far a new-look Bucks team can go. Wins now won’t change the final standings much, but it could be the bit of momentum needed to make a difference in a few months’ time.

Let’s roundup!

Can’t/won’t weigh in on the MVP race all that seriously because I don’t watch nearly enough non-Bucks basketball to have an opinion. I’m content in the knowledge that Giannis has reached a point where he is a walking, talking, 30+ point double-double who can bring it on both ends of the floor. The true realization of every bit of his potential.

Neither is Giannis all that pressed about the MVP race, at least publicly. And, frankly, I completely believe him and can relate to the way he perceives himself (again, publicly) as having so much more work to do. We can get sick of perpetual growth mindsets, but if continually setting the bar ever higher is what it takes to keep him motivated and locked in to the seasons-long grind, good for him.

Piece is a few weeks old and doesn’t really have much besides boilerplate athlete quotes, but I wanted to post it in honor of Green’s completing the journey from undrafted pickup to having a significant hand in shutting Tyrese Maxey down to help secure a win against the Sixers last week. Kyle Carr always believed in you, AJ. Remember that.

Again, this article is older (went past my radar, unfortunately), but worthwhile. Your mileage may vary on Doc — understandably so — yet it feels obvious in retrospect that he’d be the only person available for hire who has the breadth of experience to drop into a messy situation and have any chance of stabilizing it. It is easy to project forward to playoff troubles and wish the team would’ve just stuck with Prunty to get towards a clean slate in the summer. Selling that to a locker room and stars who don’t operate on those timelines would’ve been a challenge, though. So, let’s hope it all plays out according to Jon Horst’s plans.

Subhead includes the term, “NBA megastar”. I respect Tatum as much as I respect any Bucks opponent (read: not that much), but I think calling almost anyone a megastar is going a bridge too far. There’s like, one megastar every couple of decades. Might be a little early to anoint Tatum that? Even if he does remain perpetually 23 in the media’s mind.

Thoroughly impressed with how far Johnson has been able to push himself in his career and elevating a bit past his primary skill as a shooter.
Milwaukee explodes for 24 threes in win

In Khris’ Middleton return to the lineup and in a game that didn’t feature Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks handled the Phoenix Suns, 140-129.

NBA.com Box Score

With Giannis ruled out as a late scratch with hamstring soreness, the Bucks really let it fly from the perimeter to tip this one off. They’d connect on 7-of-14 3PA in the opening quarter, helping them establish a 39-36 lead going into the second quarter.

The 3-point ball continued to fall for the Bucks in the second quarter, especially for Bobby Portis. At the break, he was a perfect 5-of-5 from deep. As a team, the Bucks were 18-of-27 from deep, resulting in an 82-60 halftime advantage.

Phoenix took advantage of Khris Middleton being out in the third, as they stormed to an 11-0 run in his absence. Despite the run, Milwaukee weathered the storm and took a 109-94 lead into the fourth as Damian Lillard drilled a 33-foot buzzer beater.

The Suns continued to do their best to chip away at the deficit throughout the fourth, stringing together some threes of their own. However, the Bucks were able to hold strong and hit some timely threes of their own, putting themselves in position for a 140-129 victory.

Stat That Stood Out

The 3-point ball was flying at a historic rate for Milwaukee. In fact, how about this? The Bucks’ 18 threes in the first half was tied for the most threes in any half in NBA history. With Giannis out, it was clear in the first few minutes of action that Milwaukee was going to rely heavily on the 3-point ball. It’s a dangerous gamble whenever you’re that reliant on a three, but today, luck fell Milwaukee’s way in what was an impressive blowout St. Patrick’s Day win.

Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 PM (Central)

On Sunday at noon, the Milwaukee Bucks are hosting the Phoenix Suns in a radical 2021 NBA Finals throwback. The Bucks lost their first matchup against the Suns this season, falling 114-106 back in February. The Bucks are welcoming Khris Middleton back into the lineup, so let’s hope he gets in his groove early!

For the Bucks, Giannis is questionable with a left hamstring injury. Malik Beasley and MarJon Beauchamp are questionable with back spasms. Chris Livingston is out with a left ankle sprain.

On Phoenix’s side, Damion Lee and Josh Okogie are out.

Take us back to Summer ‘21

The other night, the Milwaukee Bucks took care of an Embiid-less Philadelphia squad to get back in the W column. Now, a new challenger enters the arena: the Phoenix Suns. Surprisingly, both squads will enter this matchup at full strength (as long as the day-to-day guys play), so we should hopefully be in store for a fun one!

Where We’re At

Last time we saw the Bucks play, they had a pretty solid win over Philly. Giannis had 32 points with great efficiency—as he often does. Brook Lopez and Damian Lillard also kept the wheels turning on offense, and Jae Crowder even got some threes to fall! As fun as it is to beat Philly (and it always is!) I’d like to move on and welcome Khris Middleton back into the rotation. He got banged up in early February on an ugly landing (against these same Suns), and we’ve had the pleasure of watching Crowder in the starting lineup ever since. While Crowder hasn’t been awful, Khris definitely has a higher ceiling on offense, so I’m excited to see him play, even if his usage is limited.

The Suns enter Fiserv Forum on the last leg of a four game roadtrip through the Eastern Conference. The Suns are 2-1 in their expedition, with a 15-point loss against Boston sandwiched between wins over Cleveland and Charlotte. In their most recent win over the Hornets, the stars had surprisingly low scoring outputs. Kevin Durant scored just 13 points, and Bradley Beal had 15. I will say, Devin Booker had 21, but besides that, it was death by a thousand cuts. The Suns implemented supremely even scoring distribution to take down the Hornets with the power of teamwork. Every starter had double digits, and Eric Gordon (remember him?) added an efficient 14 off the bench.

Injury Report

For the Bucks, Giannis is questionable with a left hamstring injury. Malik Beasley and MarJon Beauchamp are questionable with back spasms. Chris Livingston is out with a left ankle sprain.

On Phoenix’s side, Damion Lee and Josh Okogie are out.

Player to Watch

As badly as I’d like to call this a “Grayson Allen revenge game”, my player to watch is Khris Middleton. It’s his first action in a while, and I’m interested to see how hard Doc Rivers plays him today. If Middleton’s history is any indication, he will probably take a few games to play his way back into a rhythm, but crazier things have happened.

It’s been nearly six weeks since the forward sprained his ankle

After something of a false alarm on Tuesday, Khris Middleton appears primed to return to the floor for the Bucks tomorrow against the Suns, the very same team where he sustained a significant left ankle sprain on February 6th when Kevin Durant stepped into his landing zone. As related by The Athletic’s Eric Nehm:

Khris Middleton came down to speak with reporters after today's Bucks practice and confirmed that the plan is for him to play tomorrow vs. the Suns.

"Hopefully, nothing happens, knock on wood. But I expect to be playing tomorrow." - Middleton
— Eric Nehm (@eric_nehm) March 16, 2024

As such, Middleton does not appear on the injury report tomorrow for the first time in nearly six weeks (quick aside: Giannis is listed as questionable with left hamstring tendinopathy, which is a new one after seeing Achilles tendinopathy. Malik Beasley is questionable with his back spasms). Plenty of fans have grown tired of hearing Doc Rivers say that Middleton was close to returning, which he’s seemingly been saying any time he’s been asked since the All-Star break.

In hindsight, the injury to Middleton was probably a bit worse than many thought, as we discussed on Monday. While the Bucks never announced it officially, it seems likely this was a grade-two sprain, which has a typical recovery time of anywhere between four and six weeks. Middleton previously went on record with Eric about his rehab process, which sounds like it was a bit challenging.

It will ultimately be a few days shy of six weeks that the ankle kept Middleton out, so perhaps a little on the long end of the usual window, but still pretty normal for an injury that had him on crutches and in a walking boot after that Suns game. While he will indeed he’ll be on a minutes restriction at first according to the Journal Sentinel’s Jim Owczarski, Rivers mentioned the other week that Middleton needed to accumulate playing time fast with just under a month left in the regular season, and after appearing in just three games under Doc’s command before the injury. To that end, Doc says he doesn’t know what the limit will be. Maybe it doesn’t last too long as they ramp him up quickly.

Middleton started 43 games thus far, missing seven that were one side of a back-to-back before the ankle sprain. So far, he’s put up quality numbers at 14.8 PPG, 5.0 APG, and 4.3 MPB on a .487/.378/.832 stat line. He figures to slide right back into a starting lineup that rates as the best five-man unit in the league when he’s in it:

As offensive numbers have plummeted across the league in the last month, the Bucks’ scoring dropoff has felt particularly acute in light of some complementary players’ struggles putting the ball in the hoop. Middleton’s three-level shooting, isolation prowess, and perhaps most importantly, his secondary ballhandling might be just what Milwaukee needs right now. In their last five games, they’ve put up a 111.2 offensive rating per NBA.com, which ranks 20th in the league. Twice they’ve failed to put up 100 points in that span.

Reflecting the tweet above, the Bucks score 4.8 more points per 100 possessions when Middleton is on the floor, which matches my eye test. Everything just seems to flow better when Khash Money is playing, including for Damian Lillard. Even defensively, where Middleton’s dropoff from his halcyon days as perhaps the league’s most underrated 3 & D player, the Bucks allow nearly two fewer points when he’s in.

Barring a setback in warmups—which apparently happened before Tuesday’s game in Sacramento—we should see Middleton return tomorrow afternoon. For Milwaukee to make a deep playoff run and win another ring, they’ll need him healthy and playing at the level we’ve seen from him this year or better. It can’t come soon enough.

Things are decidedly less rosy this week

While I wouldn’t say that fan optimism came crashing down after its heights last week, our usual opinion polls took a step back to their more typical levels, reflecting the 1-3 road trip and its two blowouts. Here are the highlights:

The majority of respondents didn’t think their opinion that Milwaukee would be the East’s two-seed changed from the previous week, but 33% were less confident.

A similar majority felt that players’ defensive efforts (or lack thereof) were the reason for the Lakers loss, and only 26% of voters pointed the finger at Doc Rivers.

Half of fans asked are not ready to declare Damian Lillard “back” after his recent stretch of good play.

Half also felt that Middleton should be eased back into the starting lineup off the bench, and only 22% felt he should be the sixth man.

Rivers’ approval rating fell 22%, but most votes swung to undecided rather than disapproval. GM Jon Horst’s fell from 85% to 74%, with 17% undecided.

Title confidence took a big hit: 55% of fans surveyed thought the Bucks could win a title, down from 84%. The no vote went from 9% to 29%.
