January 22, 2002: A Turning Point In Recent Bucks History?

On January 22, 2002, the Milwaukee Bucks were in second place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 26-13 - winning two out of every three games. They were fresh off an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals the year before, in which they fell in seven games to the Philadelphia 76ers. They had also just crushed the Pistons one night earlier, 97-79, to extend a winning streak to eight games.

By all accounts they were a contender and things were going well. They had a highly respected coach. They had a "Big Three" of Glenn Robinson, Ray Allen, and Sam Cassell. There was a young scorer by the name of Michael Redd who was looking promising.

But then they lost by 11 points to the Phoenix Suns at the Bradley Center. And lost eight of the next eleven games. And lost just under two out of every three (65%) of their remaining games that season to finish one game shy of the playoffs. It was an unbelievable collapse, and things haven't been the same ever since.

It doesn't seem that there was anything special about that Tuesday Night in Milwaukee. Ray Allen and Tim Thomas combined to shoot a pretty awful 4-for-29 (14%), but a loss is a loss and everyone has a bad night occasionally in the NBA.

So what changed? Who knows for sure. But starting on January 22, 2002, the Bucks finished the George Karl era with a record of 57-68 (0.456) in the regular season. The collapse in the spring of 2002 had destroyed the chemistry of the team. Perhaps the chemistry was destroyed before then. A lot of people laid the blame on Anthony Mason, whom the Bucks signed prior to the 2001-2002 season. Perhaps that was the first notable instance of the Bucks being unsatisfied with building the roster that they had - trying a little too hard to make that one free agent signing or trade, something that would become more prolific in the decade to follow.

Glenn Robinson was traded after the season to the Hawks for Toni Kukoc and a first round draft pick. In the middle of the subsequent season, the Bucks traded Ray Allen (and Flip Murray and Kevin Ollie) to the Sonics for Desmond Mason and Gary Payton. And at the end of the season, Sam Cassell (and Ervin Johnson) were traded to the Timberwolves for Joe Smith. George Karl was also fired. NBA veteran Gary Payton left after only playing 28 games for the franchise.

In the blink of an eye, the team that had been so close to the NBA Finals had been dismantled. It was a disastrous year and a half for the Milwaukee Bucks.

The good ol' days - "Milwaukee Bucks Light it Up 2001 Version"

Since July of 2003, the Bucks have signed players 104 times, waived players 57 times, and have conducted 25 trades involving 84 players total, according to the transaction history at RealGM. That's assuming I counted correctly (there was a lot to sort through). Granted some of these players were merely "camp bodies" or journeymen players or short contracts, but it is still a staggering rate of roster turnover that I believe has basically prevented the franchise from ever finding anything resembling stability. It's as if the front office is playing a video game, and is constantly looking to reshuffle the deck based purely on attributes and rankings without any thought given to team chemistry.

Meanwhile, Ray Allen since 2003 has been to seven All Star games and won an NBA title, with a good chance of winning another one this year. The Bucks have had one All Star in the same span - Michael Redd in 2004.

The Bucks have been wandering around in the dark looking for the light switch, but have mainly just wound up stubbing their toe or knocking some things off the shelves, with a few minor victories in between.

They just seem to lack a strategy or long-term vision. That's my main complaint.

They seem to be structured and managed with the goal of "getting to the playoffs", rather than doing something while they're there.

So, where do the Bucks go from here?

Clearly they need a long term vision. They either need to pick some players on their current roster to build around, or acquire players to build around and stick with that plan. An endless stream of trades and signings is good for a new marketing pitch, but I think we now have tons of evidence that strategy doesn't work.

People are getting tired of watching the Bucks scrap to a near-0.500 record every year and be around the cusp of playoff qualification. What's the point? They either end up with terrible odds in the lottery, or get eliminated swiftly in the playoffs.

But that doesn't seem to be connecting with the front office. They seem to like engineering big trades, holding big press conferences to introduce their shiny new players, recycle the same lines about how these will be the guys who help us finally improve, and so on. Rinse and repeat. It has been an endless cycle for years now and it's hard to be optimistic about the direction of the team given all that.

However, they have a golden opportunity to change course this offseason. Bucks broadcaster Ted Davis has floated the idea that this could be the most important offseason in the history of the franchise. They should have cap room and the ability to start fresh with a new coach.

Call it the "curse of Anthony Mason" or the "curse of the Ray Allen trade", or whatever you like. But the fact remains that since the Bucks reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2001, they haven't made it past the first round of the playoffs - something that 12 of the 15 current Eastern Conference teams have done in that span. The only exceptions, other than the Bucks, have been the Bobcats and Raptors.

The question is whether or not the Bucks have learned their lesson, or if they'll stick with the same formula. Time will tell.

On January 22, 2002, the Milwaukee Bucks were in second place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 26-13 - winning two out of every three games.
CB's Bucks Big Board

I'll be honest, I don't care about the playoffs at all anymore, don't care who wins, loses or anything. So with that I am getting hyped about the draft. The Combines are next week so we'll get to talk about the measurables and on the 21st we get the lottery which means Mocks will have a little more lustre.

This big board represents who I would pick if available when it's the Bucks turn to pick, in order of preference. I'll be honest, I don't really like the term BPA(best player available)as it tends to be misunderstood as almost an exact science. You see people says things like "I hope they take the BPA, as long as it's not Player A". Or "Why did they take Player B, they should have taken the BPA?" BPA is subjective.....I do agree with the concept but there's so many variables that go into defining what constitutes the BPA, it's hard to know how it's done. I would expect most teams make a big board though, and may put them into tiers so if someone in their first tier sin't there when they pick, they may look to trade back.

So here goes...my Bucks Big Board as of May 9, 2013

1. Nerlens Noel(I'd be hesitant to pick him if I was #1, but if he somehow fell to #15 you have to pull the trigger)

2. Ben McLemore

3. Otto Porter

4. Trey Burke

5. Victor Olipado

6. Anthony Bennett(Canadian guy not getting a ton of love from me)

7. Shabazz Mohammed(this is where it gets tough for me, no one stands out to me)

8. C.J. McCollum

9. Alex Len

10. Michael Carter-Williams

11. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

12. Giannis Adetobouko

13. Deniis Schroder

14. Gorgui Dieng

15. Glen Rice Jr.

Others I'd consider- Sergie Karasev, Tony Mitchell

This may change between now and the Draft but feel free to offer your input.

Others I'd consider- Sergie Karasev, Tony Mitchell

This may change between now and the Draft but feel free to offer your input.

He then goes on to make us look even more idiotic by saying we were still in favor of the Redick deal even after Harris was playing like a monster in Orlando. If you read the article you will see in his side note that Mr. Simmons says he has no idea how Milwaukee couldn't realize Harris' potential all along. I for one will never take into consideration anything that Bill Simmons says in the future and I doubt he even spent a minute researching how the Milwaukee fans felt about this trade. Completely unprofessional journalism and more proof that small markets get no respect from the national media whatsoever.

A question about the playoff schedule/tickets

Greetings. I hope this is an acceptable place to post this, and if it's not please forgive me.

I know very little about basketball. My son, however, turns six today and is a HUGE NBA fan. Trying to give the little man a nice birthday, I went on Stubhub and purchased some tickets for the second home playoff game. However, I didn't realize at the time that the date/time listed were placeholders as the playoff schedule is yet to be determined. Two questions:

1. Is there any sort of tentative schedule for when game four of the first round series might be played? I have to go to Virginia for work on Monday, 4/29.
2. If game four is on 4/29 or after, does anybody recommend any website at which there might be an opportunity to trade my game four tickets for game three tickets? (I have 400 level seats.)

Thanks!
A bewildered dad

Free Agent wish list/2013 Off-season

Even though the Bucks' season isn't over (technically), this off-season will have critical implications. The major pieces involved include Monta Ellis, Brandon Jennings and Jim Boylan. Many Bucks fans are tired of the status-quo, so I have been thinking about possible scenarios for what could, should and may happen this 2013 off-season.

via img.bleacherreport.net

1. Jim Boylan is likely to be replaced. He did a good job for some time, but the team has collapsed as of late. Barring something miraculous happening vs. the Heat in the playoffs, I have to think this isn't going to work out for Jim.

2. Monta Ellis will opt out of his deal (thank god!) and we once again will be short one 'camera <strike>worthy'</strike> player, (who cares). My belief is that Sam Dalembert will also be gone and if we could (God willing) find a way to get rid of Drew Gooden, all would be right with the world. The jury is still out on what we do with JJ Reddick.

3. Most importantly, does Brandon Jennings find a market for his services and is there the one team out there willing to offer him a max deal? If the answer to question 1 is yes, do we match said offer?

So back to my point, which is the Bucks will likely have a good amount of money to play with. No matter how unlikely some of these scenarios seem and should BJ3 jump ship, here is the rebirth wish list for Milwaukee via ESPN's 2013 FA Class:

(note: ** means if BJ3 leaves)

1. O.J. Mayo

Replacement ideas for Jim Boylan: Brian Shaw, <strike>Doug Collins</strike> (nah, he turned us down once), Stan & Jeff Van Gundy, Byron Scott if he leaves Cleveland, P.J.

Hate it, love it, throw out your ideas and discuss.

Even though the Bucks' season isn't over (technically), this off-season will have critical implications.
Bucks Draft Talk

Ok, the season is over imo. I really thought the Bucks had a chance to take a step forward this year, even the Redick trade could have been ok if they moved up in the standings to avoid the Heat but it has gone south in a hurry. I know there's five meaningless games left in the season and 4 playoff games left but I don't think anyone is kidding themselves into believing the outcome is in doubt.
We know the Bucks are drafting 15th and we know the roster has some holes although our GM has been quoted as saying "Draft for talent, trade for need".

I say the Bucks need any of the following:

1. A bulky big
2. A slashing/scoring wing
3. A "true" 2 guard
4. A point guard(I am kissing BJ goodbye obviously)

Some of the guys I am interested in:

1. Archie Goodwin
2. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
3. Michael Carter-Williams
4. Tony Mitchell
5. Glenn Robinson III
6. Victor Olipado
7. Giannis Adetokoudo

That about covers it for me for first rounders anyway, obviously there are guys ranked higher that I would be interested but they won't be there at 15.

Let everyone know who you like? Is there someone you see as a god fit.

Right know I am leaning toward Caldwell-Pope.

Some thoughts on the future of Brandon Jennings and what direction I'd like to see Milwaukee go in

Dispite his recent success as a ball distributer i just cannot see 2 undersized gaurds winning basketball games in the NBA. When comparing Jennings to Ellis i come really think that it'd be in the best interest to let Jennings walk and resign Ellis. Here's my dream plan for the offseason. I think the bucks should let jennings walk and sign ellis and Redick have ellis be your point gaurd. Yes i know he turns the ball over to much and has a scorers mentalitly but i dont mind that because unlike jennings he can get to the whole and finish at the rim. redick will give ellis the spacing he needs to drive and cut towards the basket. Other than those two (Redick and Ellis) i believe the bucks should NOT resign any of the players entering free agency and make a move for Smith in free agency. To me a starting 5 of Ellis, Redick, Smith, Illy, and Sanders would a very good combination. certainly more successfull than anything we've seen in recent memory from our beloved bucks. The problem i see with that is where are we going to get our shooting from aside from redick and erson? i havent quite figured out the cap with the bucks but, hopefully they could pick up another good shooter maybe somebody off the bench with a trade involving LRMAM? I cant honestly say what his value is perceived to be around the league though. Anyways just wanted to see what you guys thought about that, or what you would like to see done in the offseason. anyways go bucks and hope we beat the heat!!!!!

Light it Up (2013): The Remix!

With the retro 90s jerseys that have been worn over the past several weeks have come mountains of nostalgia from various members of the Brew Hoop cult. Whether it be discussing our favorite Bucks players of the last 20 years, or David Stern paying the refs to ruin Milwaukee in the 2001 ECF, it has all come back.

My favorite memory of that era? The "Light It Up" song that played in house at the Bradley Center during the 2001 season. It generally got the crowd going and still brings me back to a better time with playoff wins and national pub.

In honor of this Grammy Winning song (ok not quite) I have made a remix for the 2013 season. It is a pop/jazz/hiphop version. Enjoy.

One Year Later

Everyone on BrewHoop probably remembers March 14, 2012

I am sure Steve does

Steve

We all had opinions on the deal last year, I'd say it was close to 50/50, maybe a few more on the "like" side and as I mentioned in one of the first threads, you really need to make your decision when the trade is made and not look back in hindsight. So now is the time for hindsight.

The Trade-Milwaukee sends Stephen Jackson and Andrew Bogut to Golden State for Monta Ellis, Ekpe Udoh and Kwame Brown.

The Comments

Never Trade Big for small

Andrew Bogut is a Top 3 centre when healthy

Should have waited until the off-season

Other Possible Bogut Deals

Evidently Curry and Brown for Bogut was in play

A deal with Houston likely including Luis Scola

Trade Analysis
The Bucks traded Bogut at the best possible time, in hindsight trading for Curry instead would have been better, but then you still have Jackson and really trading Bogut for Curry made no sense at the deadline as Curry was injured as well and the Bucks were pushing for the playoffs. If there was a deal with Houston that didn't include Scola(say Dalembert, Martin, Lee for Jax and Bogut)that imo would have been better as that team likely makes the playoffs last year and it would give our backcourt some needed size.
Ellis has not been great for the Bucks, barely even good for portions of his time here, although the last 2-3 weeks(he evidently had a sit-down with Herb)Monta has been money. Udoh is still a mystery to me, I want to like him but I just can't, I don't know what it is. Kwame Brown gave us the cap room to sign Ersan so that helped out as well.
From GSW's point of view in terms of talent this trade has been a disaster. You could argue that without the trade they don't get Barnes but there were certainly other ways to dipose of Ellis and Udoh. As well they quickly dumped Jax for RJ which means another 11m in salary next year, the compensation for that was draft pick Festus Ezeli who may or may not pan out.
Grade a Year Later
Gave it a B at the tim of the deal and I still stick with that. My view of the deal was made with the thought that Bogut wasn't going to be the same player likely ever again, and so far that has been true. There's still time for ANdrew I guess but I don't think there's any other conclusion than the Bucks won this trade handily.

Best Backcourt Rotations in Bucks History

It has only been a few games, but the transformation of Brandon Jennings and the emergence of Monta Ellis since the acqusition of J.J. Redick brings to mind the other great backcourt rotations the Bucks have had. The best has to be the rotation of or among Quinn Buckner, Sidney Moncreif, Brian Winters, Junior Bridgeman and Paul Pressey. Overlapping careers also give this rotation four players for even more of an advantage. So which of the remaining rotations is the next best?

A: Oscar Robertson, Lucius Allen and Jon McGlocklin.
B: Craig Hodges, Sidney Moncreif and Ricky Pierce.
C: Jay Humphries, Alvin Robertson and Dale Ellis.
D: Sam Cassell, Ray Allen and Lindsey Hunter

Better yet, let's rank them in order. Tough to do and it's being optimistic with the present rotation, but my order is A,B,E,D,C.

Bucks Coaching

How does Boylan justify starting two undersize forwards against teams that have alot of beef in their middle, ie.. clippers, instead of staring Sanders and Sammy D.

I think the coaching staff is too worried about players feelings than playing to win the damn ballgame. Richard b.m, can not defend the big guys nor can Ersan. In the West you have the big guys and in the East , it;s more fancy ball., our regular rotation is fine.

So far, the Ellis-Redick-Dunleavy-Ilyasova-Sanders combination is living up to its promise, having outscored its opponents by 28 points per 48 minutes in the first five games. The only problem is that the group has seen just 21 minutes so far

Maybe they should keep the lineup underused until the playoffs to give opposing coaches less to work with in preparation? That would be sneaky and possibly really effective. Both good things... but Jennings would probably be upset about losing playing time. Wouldn't it be nice if he could shoot the 3?
