Monday Bucks Notes

  • Dan at RealGM makes a great (but frightening) point about the Bucks' delayed GM search:

Kohl, Walter, et al are ALREADY meddling with the new GM and they haven't even hired him yet! Any new GM is forced to keep Dave Babcock rather than bring in their own person if they want. THAT is meddling. And it's not that they just have to keep Babcock, but he is the one in charge of the draft. THAT is meddling.

Unless things get really wacky (Bucks go on a winning streak, etc.) we are going to have a top 10 draft pick to either use or trade. That should be a major tool that the new GM should have at his disposal when attempting to adjust our roster. But he won't get to. Babcock will be in charge of the draft. But of course Babcock won't ultimately be in charge. When he decides who we need to draft, he will then have to run it by Kohl, Walter, etc. just like Harris had to do when he decided we should take Yi.

  • The Bratwurst checks in on the latest GM talk (our take).
  • David Locke takes a closer look at Rick Sund's drafting history. Looks a little generous with his grading to me, but some good points.
  • Opening day is almost upon us, so be sure to check out BrewCrewBall.com if you need a place to get your Brewers fix. No better way to start the day than BCB's Frosty Mug, the open threads are very active and the analysis is always on point.
  • Jim Paschke has more on the 40th anniversary team celebration.
  • Michael Redd with some choice words following last week's loss to the Hawks:

Asked about the fourth quarter, Redd said, "I watched the same game you watched. I'm dumbfounded. I don't know. But I refuse to let it get to me. Stay professional. Come to work the next day and keep playing hard. But I'm frustrated. I'm beyond frustrated. I mean, it's ridiculous . . . just the overall situation."

Redd said that he had expected to go back in.

"Absolutely," he said. "But it just didn't happen. I'm not going to say, 'Put me in.' But it's bizarre."

  • With apologies to Michael Beasley, if you gave me the first overall pick today, I'm taking Derrick Rose. How's this for a weekend: two wins, 48 points (17/26 fg, 13/15 ft), 14 assists, 10 rebounds and just two turnovers. Particularly impressive was the way he dominated fellow lottery hopeful D.J. Augustin. Chris Douglas-Roberts and Joey Dorsey also acquitted themsevles very nicely. Watch highlights of Memphis' Friday night win over Michigan St.
  • Speaking of the draft, Ty at Bucks Diary is coming around on Kevin Love. It's normally hard to get too excited about a college center whose playing style is often referred to as "below the rim" (or even net as Ty jokes), but there's no denying Love's ridiculous level of productivity, especially during the tournament: 21.8 ppg, 11 rpg, and 4.3 bpg. I don't know if Milwaukee would be a great situation for him, but while his physical limitations may prevent him from being a superstar, he seems way too skilled and competitive not to be a very solid pro.
