SG-Wing Prospects in 2015

It's premature to declare the Bucks a playoff team, but at the very least it no longer looks like there is another trip to the lottery coming.

The roster has multiple positions locked up with at least two young cap-friendly players; the only position that the Bucks still depend on a veteran is shooting guard. Don't get me wrong, I like what OJ has done this season, but there's nothing wrong with grooming a two-way shooting guard with upside in the second unit.

NCAA 'Path of Least Resistance'

Sometimes the right path is the safe path, these are the best *current* guard prospects in a relatively 'weak' guard class, what does a #20 pick get you in this draft class?

Rashad Vaughn - 6'5 (6'6 Wingspan) - Freshman, I have not had a chance to view any UNLV Rebels games. He has a long season ahead of him to prove that he's worth a pick, but his stats impress:

Wayne Selden - 6'6 (6'10 Wingspan) - Played with No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins last year in an unimpressive run. Still considered a first round prospect as a sophomore, likely a future second-unit player in the NBA.

Andrew Harrison - 6'6 (6'7 Wingspan) - The 'better' twin with a chip on his shoulder, has combo-guard skills which can help give Knight time to breathe. Went through high-school as the No. 2 overall high school prospect, then proceeded to not impress in a loaded freshman class. Personally feel like his brother might have the better career since he was always considered the 'weaker prospect'. Then again, there isn't currently a better options past Harrison worth a first round pick.

Risk-Reward:

Milwaukee isn't averse to risk and the international flair of the roster is something I personally would like to build on, it's how the Spurs do business!

(Warning: FC Barcelona Bàsquet favoritism incoming, if you are a Real fan, turn away or admit they have the best *young* talent).

'Super' Mario Hezonja - 6'8 (?'? Wingspan) - My personal pick if he drops, his athleticism is insane, he has great shooting mechanics, good defensive IQ and respectable handles.

His worst case scenario is Evan Fournier, who was underrated for his first two years until landing in Orlando. I'll explain why his teammate Alex Abrines is taking his minutes in just a bit, these do not reflect his base or ceiling:

Risk-Reward ~ a different take:

There are alternatives to drafting a player yourself, multiple teams hold international draft rights to talented shooters that will never come over. What do these 'prospects' cost the Bucks? A future second round pick, cap relief or a bench warmer; essentially nothing.

Alex Abrines - 6'6 (6'6 Wingspan) - Drafted in 2013 by the Oklahoma City Thunder, another product of Barcelona's system. Will likely never be called over by the Thunder, but this player impresses if you follow the Euroleague or the Spanish national team. Why is he taking Mario's minutes? Polish and personality, there's also a bit of favoritism since he's Spanish.

With Juan Carlos Navarro 34 years old, he's slated to take over the starting role soon; it will certainly be harder to tear him away from Barcelona, but a chance at the NBA might change that.

Tomáš Satoranský - 6'7 (6'7 Wingspan) - Who? Drafted by the Washington Wizards and claimed he'd never play for them. Unlike Abrines, I don't necessarily know that Tomas is an NBA player, he might come over and bust. However, his 3P% currently sits at 66.7%, I know sample size and all, but still... while his comments to the Wizards organization does not inspire confidence, I know some members of Brewhoop enjoy confident players:

Trades:

Not suggesting the Bucks make a trade.. but trades happen in the NBA; if a veteran is leaving, here are some U23 opportunity guys that are currently buried on competitive rosters:

Tony Snell - (CHI) Bit of a project but would flourish under Kidd's system; inefficient in limited minutes, watching him last year and during summer league gives me the impression that he has the best two-way potential.

I think this is another case of Chicago recognizing an underrated player late in the draft, but not having minutes for him (Butler, Gibson, traded for Asik, and traded for Mirotic); would maybe cost Bayless.

Archie Goodwin - (PHX) Good luck breaking the rotation in PHX, underrated scorer.

Glen Rice Jr. - (WSH) Summer-league M.V.P. great genes, can't stay healthy... currently unfairly in the D-league.

Glenn Robinson III - (MIN) Respect his dad, he came in more NBA ready than Wiggins/Lavine how is this guy a bench warmer??

Allen Crabbe - (POR) Good defender, good 3P%, but bad at everything else. Ultimately redundant if Damien Inglis plays up to his potential.

Reggie Bullock - (LAC) Clippers don't really have minutes for him, was impressive in college.

Thanks for reading my musings, I enjoy watching Euroleague and NCAA and dreaming about which players would fit on my favorite teams.
