Many votes have been cast, and the runaway winner of the top spot on Brew Hoop's 2014 Community Draft Board is Joel Embiid, C, Kansas. Embiid entered the most recent college basketball season as a relative unknown, totally overshadowed by his much-hyped teammate, Andrew Wiggins. That didn't last. People were soon marveling at Embiid's raw ability and on-court production, and for long stretches he looked like the Jayhawks' best player (indeed, he was arguably their most important player).
In light of his youth and relative inexperience with the sport, Embiid's basketball instincts and skillset are impressive. He's viewed as having a much higher offensive ceiling than your traditional college big man, with the potential to be a true two-way superstar. Comparisons to Hakeem Olajuwon get tossed out, and they aren't immediately shot down with laughter and yelling. That says a lot. Embiid might be the consensus top-overall pick across the league if not for lingering concern over a back injury that cost him the end of his college season. If his health cooperates, he could be one of the best players of his generation. If not, he could be just another big man bust. Additional reading:
