2017 NBA Draft - Brew Hoop Community Draft Board: Markelle Fultz nabs #1, will #2 be a surprise?

Brew Hoop readers dare to dream of the vaunted point guard prospect.

NCAA Basketball: Washington at Washington State James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

Despite an extremely disappointing one-and-done career, Markelle Fultz - PG, Washington is the presumptive number one pick in mock drafts nationwide and the Brew Hoop community decisively votes for chalk in the 2017 draft board. A 9-21 record on the season positions Fultz to be the second consecutive first overall pick to not make the NCAA Tournament, but his play, stats and high-upside are too mouthwatering to pass up.

With good reason, the offseason has been peppered with talk of the Bucks deficiency at point guard and options to shore up the spot on the roster. Although his defense is nothing to write home about, Fultz seems like an ideal fit for the Bucks. Physically, he’s a 6’4” point guard with a 6’10” wingspan with the ability to learn and adapt to the Bucks scrambling defensive scheme. He averaged 1.8 steals per 40 minutes in college and grabbed 4.4 defensive boards as well - on a team that struggled defensively all season.

Fultz is used to bringing the ball up and shooting off the dribble, but Fultz showed an impressive catch and shoot game as well. Fultz shot 41.3% from behind the arc on the season, and 56% of his threes came on assisted three-pointers. He’d be an ideal candidate to catch kick-out passes from Antetokounmpo where he’s a threat to shoot and efficiently attack a closeout to get to the rim.

He’d bring some much-needed quickness to the Bucks roster while maintaining the Bucks physical freak status quo. With a 56% true shooting percentage and the highest PER of any freshman in college last season, Fultz is an almost sure bet. It’s unlikely his 3PT% translates perfectly, especially with a 65% free throw percentage, but Fultz would be able to play alongside the likes of Matthew Dellavedova and Malcolm Brogdon in the guard rotation.

Fultz’s fit it obvious, especially on a Bucks team that could use his versatility, on ball/off ball skills and athleticism to push Milwaukee’s ceiling even higher. However, the Bucks lack the king’s ransom of star player (Giannis isn’t going anywhere for a long time) and picks to pry the number one pick from their Eastern conference compatriots in Boston.
