Welcome to the Brew Hoop Night Shift. Every evening at 9:00pm (central time), this all-purpose thread goes up, and the comments section is where it’s going down. What Bucks news did we not cover? What topics do you want to break down further? Or is there something non-Bucks that you want to bounce off of one another? Even something non-basketball? This is the place.
Tonight’s (on) topic: All-Defensive Team
2018 NBA All-Defensive teams:
— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) May 23, 2018
First team: Rudy Gobert, Anthony Davis, Victor Oladipo, Jrue Holiday, Robert Covington.
Second team: Joel Embiid, Draymond Green, Al Horford, Dejounte Murray, Jimmy Butler.
Hmmm...
There appears to be a 20 letter name missing from the All-Defensive Teams this year. The exclusion of Giannis Antetokounmpo is surprising, but the forward voting is stacked, to be fair.
Giannis averaged one and a half steals and blocks per game which were both down from last season. His defensive box plus/minus was considerably down from this season to last. Antetokounmpo posted a 1.9 DBPM which was down from his 3.5 rating for the 2016/17 season. So I guess I take back what I said above and that his exclusion is not that surprising.
Either way, Giannis received some votes and I am excited to see how he can improve defensively under the new regime.
Tonight’s (off) topic:
Keeping with the theme, I was able to name nearly 70% of all the All-Defensive First Teams in NBA history (excluding this year). This was tough and once I got into the mid-90s after working backwards, I started guessing whichever big names popped into my head.
