Report: Sean Sweeney Leaving Milwaukee Bucks for Detroit Pistons

And with that, all traces of the Jason Kidd era are whisked away

We interrupt the bevy of draft coverage for this important assistant coaching announcement, Sean Sweeney is apparently heading to join Dwane Casey in Detroit! This is according to a story from EuroHoops.

The retention of Sweeney, Kidd’s defensive architect and oft-maligned assistant by Bucks fans, seemed a bit puzzling at the time it was announced. Mike Budenholzer presumably had his own ideas about the defensive scheme, player development etc. while Sweeney would be adapting to an entirely new coaching staff and style. This news comes after Marc Stein hinted at the fact last night Casey was going hard after Sweeney.

Sweeney’s close relationship with Giannis was noted throughout the hiring process, but we’ll never know if that was the true reason he was retained or if Bud saw something in him. If Detroit made such a concerted effort to nab him, it’s probably a sign he’s still relatively respected in NBA coaching circles. What role he’ll have in Detroit is unclear, but EuroHoops says it’s a “prominent” assistant coaching role.

With Sweeney’s departure, all traces of Kidd’s coaching tenure here have effectively been wiped from the Bucks’ coaching seats. No word yet on whether Giannis is distraught over the news, but something tells me he’ll be just fine. For a certain subset of Bucks fandom, this development only sweetens the joy of draft day.
