Ranking the Roster 2018: Who Are the Most Valuable Bucks?

Brew Hoop’s annual asset ranking exercise is back!

Welcome to the fifth annual Brew Hoop “Rank the Roster!” series! The Milwaukee Bucks have certainly gone through some changes this summer (both on the roster and in the coach’s office), but there isn’t any doubt that once again, Giannis Antetokounmpo will be named the Most Valuable Buck for another year. For context, here are the results from the past two seasons:

As it is in life, the only constant in the NBA is change. For the Bucks, 2017-18 came with a number of significant changes, including the departures of Greg Monroe, Mirza Teletovic, and Jabari Parker, while welcoming the additions of Eric Bledsoe, Brook Lopez, and Ersan Ilyasova (who may have finally escaped those ninjas!).

As is tradition, we remind our readers that this community ranking exercise is not based just on who is the best player, but should be looked through the lens of roster building. We encourage you to factor in players’ talent, age, leadership potential, and whatever other primary factors you consider when evaluating a basketball asset. Think of it like an expansion draft, and you are voting for the player you are most willing to part with.

Money matters too; not all contracts were created equal! For starters, you can refer to the always-helpful graphics put together by our beloved blog father, Frank Madden.

Speaking of Frank, he and noted Brew Hoop alum Eric Nehm recently launched their own exercise that is in the same vein; check out the first Locked on Bucks episode of Bucks Survivor here!

To set the stage, let’s clarify a few things. We are going to reserve our polling for the Bucks’ likely roster players, with the exception of Tyler Zeller. His non-guaranteed deal means that there’s a chance he is ousted in favor of another player, so we will include notable training camp invites Christian Wood and Shabazz Muhammad. However, because of the nature of two-way contracts, we’re going to leave out Jaylen Morris and Trevon Duval; nothing against them, but their deals are guaranteed to split their time between the NBA and the G-League, whereas one of Zeller, Wood, or Muhammad (or a player to be determined later!) will totally spend their time on the Bucks’ roster. Lastly, we’re going to leave out the Bucks’ top four talents (Giannis, Khris Middleton, Bledsoe, and Malcolm Brogdon) because they’re pretty clearly the team’s best players; however, once enough of the current list has been reduced, you’ll see these names make an appearance.

Alright, let’s get to it. The clock starts...now!
