Ranking the Roster 2018: It’s a Henson-Delly Double Whammy!

Two of the Bucks’ worst contracts make their exit in this double feature.

People have accused me of rigging the vote. Putting my thumb on the scale. Unduly influencing the election of the Milwaukee Bucks’ least valuable players. And to those unfounded accusations, I say this:

It’s the freakin’ weekend, everybody, so let’s have some fun with a two-for-one special! With 37% of the vote, John Henson is the next exile on the boat off of the island, and just behind him with 36% is Matthew Dellavedova, scrapping his way onto the ship before anchors aweigh.

Henson and Delly’s value comes in two forms: on the court, and on the cap sheet. On the court, both players are at (or about) replacement level: Henson quietly had a career year last year with 8.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game over 25.9 minutes (the most he’s played since his sophomore season). But at $10.6M this year and $9.7M next year, that’s simply too much to pay for that level of production.

For Delly, the on-court performance is less impressive in the aggregate (4.3 points and 3.8 assists per game in 2017-18), and at $9.6M for both this season and next, it’s often argued that he provides worse value than most of his teammates. But, as a reliable veteran player, he still was tapped for time on the floor...largely because other guards (like Malcolm Brogdon) were hurt or (like Brandon Jennings) barely NBA-level talents anymore.

We’re at the point in this exercise now where things get interesting! Nearly everybody remaining for the voting provides some measure of reliability or upside (or both!), meaning that the discussion around who gets voted off next should at least be interesting!
