Here come the Nets, the greatest offensive team in history. What chance do the those Deer's have, being caught up in the bright lights, against such a great team?
When posed with such heavy questions, I take a look at the history books (basketballreference.com).
It turns out, that just like in Troy, they might have an Achilles issue. Those clever Greeks found a weakness, and did not horse around.
And that weakness is called defensive rating. The Nets ranked 23rd in DRTG this year. The history books tell us that is not good enough. No team in the past 20 years has won a title with that bad of a defense. In the past 10 years, only the Dirk's Mavs team was outside the top 10 (11th in DRTG).
In the past 20 years, the only other team outside the top 10 was the 2000-01 Shaq/Kobe feuding Lakers. And they could play it if they flipped their switch, evidenced by the fact that they ranked 1st the previous season.
In the past 20 seasons, teams with rings averaged a 5.4 defensive rating.
Another hidden weakness is the Nets lack luster net rating. The Nets had +4.5 this year. In the past 20 years, Champions have averaged +7.4, and only those moody Lakers had a lower net (+3.6).
When looking at other great one dimensional offensive teams that failed to win rings, Lets look at the D'Antoni/Nash Suns. In the 4 seasons, they averaged 16th in DRTG and had a net rating of +6.3. So I guess these Nets are a poor man's comparison to those old Sun teams that flamed out.
If only if their was a Greek hero that was willing to attack the Net's wall.
