Team Rankings

Based on my Player and Coach rankings, and then using a proprietary formula concocted in a secret test lab called Excel and my brain, here is how I would rank teams for the regular season and postseason. To put it simply, the regular season leans heavily on depth, whereas the postseason ranking is more tilted towards the effect of star players, and players in the "good backup" tier no longer are taken into account. Teams are ranked within the tiers. I reserve the right to continue tinkering.

*Injury Prone-ness is not taken into account

**Team Drama Quotient is not taken into account

***This ranking does not include rookies, as it is essentially impossible to predict how impactful each will be on winning

Regular Season:

Tier One

Warriors

Tier Two

Clippers (*would be high on Injury Prone-ness)

Heat (last year the one seed too, so I think this ranking is justified)

Tier Three

Celtics

Tier Four

Raptors

Tier Five

Suns (**Team Drama Quotient is very high)

Grizzlies (factoring in Jaren Jackson Jr missing approximately half the season)

Nuggets

Bucks (our lack of depth is a bit of a concern to me, especially without Ingles for much of the season)

Tier Six

76ers

Pelicans (factoring in Zion Williamson playing the whole season, which...who knows)

Tier Seven

Cavaliers

Tier Eight

Timberwolves

Trail Blazers (8 seed)

Mavericks

Tier Nine

Bulls

Tier Ten

Knicks (8 seed)

Hawks

Nets (10 seed) (factoring in Durant and Kyrie playing the whole season, which...)

Lakers (10 seed)

Kings

Magic

Hornets

Pacers

Spurs

Jazz

Wizards

Thunder

Tier Eleven

Pistons

Tier lol

Rockets

Playoff Rankings:

Tier One: Reigning Champs, Favorites

Warriors

Tier Two: Other Favorites

Celtics (annoyingly, Brogdon is the difference between being in this tier or being just below the Bucks)

Clippers

Tier Three: Contenders

Bucks

76ers

Tier Four: Dark Horses

Grizzlies (factoring in a healthy JJJ)

Suns

Tier Five: 2nd Round Teams

Nets (factoring in Durant and Kyrie playing)

Pelicans

Nuggets

Heat

Tier Six: 2nd Round Dark Horse

Raptors

Tier Seven: 2nd Round Dark Horses

Lakers

Mavericks

Tier Eight: First Round Fodder

Timberwolves

Tier Nine

Cavaliers

Hawks

Tier Ten

Trail Blazers

Tier Eleven

Bulls

A few observations:

  • the playoff field is going to be loaded this year, barring significant injuries
  • both the East and West are good, but the West is scarier due to having pinnacle players on their low end playoff teams (Lebron and Luka), especially if the Nets fall apart, which has basically already happened
  • the Bucks are in for a fight with the Celtics and 76ers, both of whom are constructed in my opinion to beat the Bucks
  • Bucks in 6!
What would your rankings be? What are your thoughts on mine?
