Hello everyone!
This is a ranking/tier I made of the players I view as the best 3pt shooters, best defenders, and best all around 3&D players. I didn't include star players, as they are more than just a 3&D type role player. Some of these players have larger roles than others, but not a big difference.
For a bit of a peek behind the curtain, the 3pt rank is based on career 3pt% (not always the most indicative, but a large sample size) and career 3pt attempts per 36 (volume can be important when defense gets tougher in the postseason imo). The Def rank is based on this season DEPM (https://dunksandthrees.com/epm) and this season's D Differential % (https://www.nba.com/stats/players/defense-dash-overall?Season=2022-23) . If I really had the inclination, I'd look at this season 3pt shooting and career or last season of the defensive stats, but I don't really have that much time.
(sorry the table formats so narrow)
Thinking about trade targets for the Bucks, some of these players are obviously untouchable (Keegan Murray, Tari Eason for example, I just wanted to include them). Some are unlikely targets because they're already on another contender (Dean Wade, Anthony Lamb for example). Some just got moved (Finney-Smith for example) and so are probably stuck.
The players I would initially target as the Bucks are:
- Quentin Grimes
- Cam Johnson
- OG Anunoby
- Patrick Williams
Then when I got shot down because the asking price was more than the Bucks can afford, I would target these players:
- Alex Caruso
- Jae Crowder
- Taurean Prince
- Robert Covington
- Garrison Mathews
- Gary Harris
- PJ Washington
- Buddy Hield
- Tim Hardaway
I prefer the guys who are stronger on defense and have good size even if they're weaker in 3pt shooting, rather than vice versa. However, most of those players are on contenders and/or highly valued by their own team.
Jae Crowder really doesn't rate that well as a shooter, though not awful. He doesn't have any defensive stats this season, so I put him at a pretty neutral level. He may be better than neutral though, which would catapult him up the list. He's also a good matchup against Boston's wing size. Even though they rate shockingly high on the list, I don't want Pat and really don't want Grayson to have to spend a lot of time on the court trying to guard Brown/Tatum.
Players that don't quite fit the criteria as a 3pt shooter or as a defender, but are excellent at the other thing:
I'd be really interested in taking a chance on Jalen McDaniels from this list as well, as I feel that anybody in Charlotte is likely to play better in a different environment.
Thanks for reading!
